Apex will hire one or two summer environmental interns to join our team of scientists working on various biological field projects related to reclamation efforts in the Rocky Mountain Region. This position will be an opportunity for you to learn new skills, travel, and gain valuable natural resource experiences. Our interns work with professional scientists to learn the skills necessary to work in environmental consulting.

Requirements

  • College-level coursework or field experience related to biological, environmental, or earth sciences. Botany and plant identification experience is preferred.
  • An aptitude to identify weeds, grasses, forbs, and shrubs native to Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado.
  • Some experience with vegetation monitoring techniques such as quadrat sampling. We will provide training.
  • Proficiency in navigating and interpreting ArcGIS Field Maps and Google Earth.
  • Ability to work independently and self-initiate in demanding work conditions.
  • Strong communication skills, the ability to successfully multi-task, safety awareness, and a good record and understanding of safe work practices.
  • Experience with recording scientific data.
  • Willingness for week-long overnight travel, including weekends, with all expenses paid and a per diem.
  • Valid driver's license and safe driving record.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment and ongoing random drug screens.

Responsibilities

  • Independently conduct reclamation and vegetation monitoring surveys throughout Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah.
  • Learn to gather, analyze, and conduct basic scientific data interpretation.
  • Accurately complete field data entry forms using electronic data collection devices such as tablets and Global Positioning System (GPS) units.
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) necessary to conduct compliance monitoring tasks safely.
  • Be willing and able to follow all health and safety procedures and make safe field-based judgments. Health and safety training will be a vital part of your training, and you will not work in the field until you complete all training.
  • Comfortable working in remote and sometimes isolated conditions during the day.
  • Be willing to learn new skills, be mentored by professionals, and work as a team.
