About The Position

The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is dedicated to protecting and promoting the health of Virginians. The VDH is made up of a statewide Central Office in Richmond and 35 local health districts. The Mount Rogers Health District is seeking an Environmental Health Supervisor to provide leadership, operational oversight, and technical guidance for a diverse team of Environmental Health staff serving Wythe County, Bland County, and Smyth County. This role provides supervision and support across multiple environmental health programs, including food safety, onsite sewage and water, rabies control, general environmental health services, and other regulatory and public health initiatives. The supervisor will lead program planning, ensure regulatory compliance, coordinate staff development, and assist with complex casework or inspections as needed. The position may be based out of the Wythe County Health Department, the Bland County Health Department, or the Bland City Health Department. The selected candidate will oversee operations across all three locations and is expected to spend time in each office every week to provide in‑person support, maintain program consistency, and ensure effective communication with staff and community partners.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of technical and operational aspects of environmental health programs.
  • Experience providing effective supervision and leadership of professional and technical staff.
  • Experience evaluating programmatic needs assessments, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of service delivery.
  • Experience identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Strong communication skills, to include communicating effectively in writing as appropriate for the needs of the audience and conveying verbal information clearly.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in the administration of public environmental health programs
  • Environmental Health Specialist Senior certifications are preferred
  • Environmental Health Technical Specialist certifications are preferred
