Under general supervision, performs professional environmental and public health sanitation work and ensures compliance with Federal, State, and local laws and regulations. May assign and review the work of subordinate personnel or supervise a specialized phase of an environmental sanitation program.

  • Inspects all facilities including nurseries, kindergartens, hospitals, health care and convalescent homes, restaurants, retail grocery stores, taverns, and bakeries to determine compliance with State and local ordinances.
  • Administers specialized area in programs involving food protection, community conservation, rodent and mosquito control, water well legislation, recreational hygiene and water quality monitoring.
  • Reviews plans to evaluate potential environmental impact on public health.
  • Performs field inspections, collects samples, conducts tests, and operates and services technical equipment to ensure compliance with Federal, State or local environmental laws and regulations or to study various environmental health issues. Prepares reports and compiles field data.
  • Responds to complaints and disseminates environmental health information to citizens and community groups.
  • May supervise subordinate personnel or act as team leader over a specialized phase of an environmental sanitation program.
  • Serves as a resource person on regulations and legislation affecting specialized areas.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in one of the physical, environmental health, or biological sciences, engineering or agriculture; or registration as a Professional Environmental Health Specialist in the State of Maryland
  • Two years' experience in public health sanitation.
  • Possession of a valid license to legally operate any class of vehicle or equipment necessary to perform the duties of the position is required at the time of appointment.
  • Current registration as a Professional Environmental Health Specialist in the State of Maryland is required at the time of application.
  • Applicants are required to submit proof of licenses, certifications and education beyond high school to meet the required and preferredqualifications of the position. Diplomas or transcripts must show the applicant's major field of study. Copies and unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
  • Applicants who have obtained a degree from outside the United States of America are required to submit degree equivalence documentation from World Education Services, Inc. (www.WES.org).
  • Employees must maintain required licenses and certifications throughout the course of employment.
  • Applicants selected for employment with Baltimore County must successfully complete a physical examination, drug screening and employment investigation, including, but not limited to criminal background, education certification and fingerprinting checks.
  • Education beyond a bachelor's degree in a physical, environmental health or biological science, engineering or agriculture may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
