About The Position

Provides basic technical assistance in the administration of policies, standards, and regulations relating to environmental health and safety under general supervision. Works in the Environmental Protection Management Program of the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Department. Responsible for ensuring hazardous materials generated by UTMB are managed in accordance with strict internal compliance and safety procedures. Will engage primarily in daily waste operations with periodic collaborations with other EHS programs for annual projects.

Requirements

  • High School graduate or GED, no experience is required.
  • Must have a valid Texas driver’s license and able to operate a UTMB vehicle.
  • Will be required to achieve and maintain 40-hour Hazardous Waste Operations certification according to 29 CFR 1910 requirements and achieve fitness for duty clearance within the first 6 months of hire.
  • Knowledge of environmental health & safety regulations.
  • Skills to identify hazardous materials, warning statements and exposure mitigation.
  • Ability to inspect, test, monitor, or measure environmental conditions.

Nice To Haves

  • Associate’s degree in environmental, natural, or applied science, or related field, and/or 6 months of related experience in hazardous materials management.

Responsibilities

  • Collects, transports, segregates, and processes hazardous waste, including but not limited to chemical, pharmaceutical, radiological, and regulated medical wastes.
  • Performs hazardous waste determinations and classifications.
  • Responds to emergency hazardous material spill incidents for containment and cleanup.
  • Assists in data collection, data entry, and records management for hazardous waste.
  • Performs inspection or testing of environmental equipment and registered facilities.
  • Provides technical support on environmental assignments within established time frames.
  • Assists in new/improved work process implementation for environmental programs.
  • Coordinates work duties within program areas and with institutional peers and vendors.
  • Assists in the development and delivery of safety training/educational programs.
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
  • Performs related duties as required.
