About The Position

The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Engineer will lead critical initiatives that protect our people, our facilities, and our environment at Proterra’s Greer manufacturing site. This role drives EHS program development, regulatory compliance, ISO 14001 management, incident prevention, and continuous improvement across operations. The EHS Engineer partners closely with Production, Maintenance, Engineering, and Leadership to strengthen our safety culture, reduce risk, and support sustainable, high‑quality manufacturing.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in an EHS, Engineering, or technical-related field required
  • 7+ years in EHS roles within a manufacturing setting
  • ISO 14001 Lead Auditor
  • Demonstrate a broad knowledge of EPA, SCDES, DOT, OSHA, and NFPA.
  • Interfacing with regulatory agencies
  • Comfort in leveraging multiple software platforms to integrate solutions with existing business platforms.
  • Develop, implement, and regularly update EHS policies, procedures, and training material
  • Adept at conflict resolution and finding consensus in challenging situations.
  • May work various shifts as needed; may be requested to travel to different locations.
  • Lifting up to 25 pounds and occasionally 50 pounds.
  • Able to walk, stand, crouch, bench, kneel, lift, carry and reach as needed in large and tight spaces.
  • Good eye/hand coordination and ability to identify color variations, depth perceptions and close or distance visual items.
  • Manual dexterity with occasional repetitive finger motion.
  • Hands-on position on the production floor as well as time spent in an office environment preparing documents and/or performing training.
  • Ability to work in manufacturing environment with extreme heat and cold conditions.
  • Wear protective clothing or respiratory protective equipment.
  • Works with irritant chemicals, gases, etc.

Nice To Haves

  • CSP, CIH, and/or CHMM certification
  • Master’s Degree
  • OSHA 501 – Trainer certificate for General Industry
  • Leading EHS Programs in the automotive industry
  • Working knowledge of Electric Vehicle manufacturing
  • Proficiency with Power BI

Responsibilities

  • Develop, enhance, and promote environmental, health, and safety programs and policies to promote a safe work environment and mitigate exposure to the environment.
  • Influences Plant, Production, Operations, Maintenance, Engineering, and Executive leadership to drive the EHS culture, performance, and results.
  • Management of all EHS programs and policies
  • Supports company interface with regulatory authorities for regulatory visits, requests and submissions for the region.
  • Monitors changes to all EHS regulations pertaining to their area and reviews recommendations for incorporation into EHS management systems and standards in a timely manner.
  • Ensure compliance with all OSHA, federal, state and local guidelines regarding health and safety programs
  • Accountable for managing site EHS documentation to include program design, EHS data collection and posting, training documentation, and EHS KPI reports.
  • Lead all efforts to maintain ISO 14001 certification and manage the system to ensure compliance, subsequent recertifications.
  • Lead all environmental compliance obligations for the organization including applicable regulatory reports
  • Serve as the system administrator for all EHS Metrics including, but not limited to incident and corrective action management, compliance training, safety observations, and near miss reporting.
  • Prepare EHS reports detailing leading and lagging metrics.
  • Develop, maintain, track, and report all EHS training and serve as the system administer for Proterra’s EHS Learning Management System (LMS).
  • Conduct safety inspections, ergonomic risk assessments, job hazard analysis, and ensure compliance with EPA, OSHA, DOT, SC DES, and local authorities.
  • Coordinate incident investigations, including root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Develop and integrate waste management, minimization, and recycling programs.
  • Understand and adhere to current quality and control policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to ensure continuous improvement, compliance.
