About The Position

The Director of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) manages general compliance with the Company’s quality, safety, health and environmental processes and programs. The incumbent is responsible for assisting in the development, update, direction and implementation of health, safety and environmental programs, policies and procedures to reduce accidental losses. Helps ensure employee, vendor, contractor and customer safety in accordance with all company policies, procedures, work instructions and applicable regulatory requirements.

Requirements

Comprehensive knowledge of federal and state OSHA, U.S. Coast Guard and other applicable codes and regulations.
Ability to accomplish goals through others.
Ability to document and run reports through Microsoft Word, Excel, and other systems.
Requires strong and effective verbal and written communication skills.
Requires ability to investigate and analyze results.
Ability to create, analyze, and identify trends in data.
Ability to influence others, teach and present.
Attention to detail.
BA / BS degree in EH&S or equivalent combination of education and experience
Six (6) years of safety management experience within marine industry or similar environment
Knowledge of maintenance activities and equipment, marine terminal, stevedore and vessel operations.
Ability to understand and interpret union contract.
Must be available 24/7 for emergencies and participate on rotational safety hotline.
Must have current driver’s license and insurable driving record.
Available to work weekends, days, nights, and holidays.
Experience with 5-Why and Root Cause Analysis investigating/reporting
Experience in training development.
Must have or be able to obtain a TWIC card
Requires physical ability to access ships, cranes, the yard and office space.
The ability to use a computer/keyboard.
The ability to climb up and down a ladder.
The ability to work in changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions.
The ability to drive 50%.
The ability to lift 30 pounds.
The ability to travel out of state to other locations.
Ability to work at heights

Responsibilities

Advises VP of Environmental Health and Safety on safety compliance concerns and preventative actions.
Develops and maintains positive relationships, including staff, peers, union workforce and officials, and customers and vendors.
Champions the company’s EH&S programs in all aspects of work performed to provide quality service in a safe and efficient manner.
Reviews company activities and ensures compliance with EH&S policies, plans and procedures.
Provides input and advisement to operations management on EH&S relevant topics.
Collaborates with EH&S professionals in the implementation of programs, processes and strategies both internally and externally with stakeholders.
Provides mentoring and coaching to develop EH&S personnel and M&R / Operations Teams.
Compiles and publishes EH&S statistics and communicates to all management and personnel.
Suggests and analyzes balanced performance measures and creates action plans for improvement.
May lead and/or follow up on incident investigations to ensure close-out and corrective actions to prevent reoccurrence and ensure communications of results are shared across the workforce.
Promotes EH&S-related lessons learned and the exchange of EH&S information across the workforce with the goal of achieving higher awareness.
Engages in implementation of training programs, report writing, plan development and implementation, proposal/tender reviews and input, researching and interpreting standards and codes, reviewing incident investigation reports, giving presentations.
Manages Company workers’ compensation process, communicating with employees, medical providers and claims adjusters, internal teams as necessary.
Conducts regular inspections, monitoring area safety and environmental practices including equipment and machinery.
Report any violations to appropriate management staff when required.
Inspect equipment and machinery to observe possible unsafe conditions
Supports and participates in “toolbox” safety meetings.
Develops, coordinates, and conducts safety training for all employees.
May represent the Company by participation in industry associations to develop aligned EH&S requirements and share or learn best practices.
Participates in and assists in the preparation of annual budget and forecasting activities along with the associated inventory tracking requirements.
Conducts routine site visits (Sites, facilities and jobs) and may facilitate audits or inspections with the management team.
Drive employees to appropriate facilities for medical attention as necessary.
Performs any and all job duties as assigned.
