About The Position

The Environmental Health Inspector I is an entry-level position responsible for supporting the inspection, monitoring, and enforcement of environmental health standards in various settings. Under the supervision of more senior inspectors or managers, the Environmental Health Inspector I conducts inspections, identifies potential health hazards, and assists in enforcing environmental health regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental health, public health, biology, or a related field.
  • Basic understanding of environmental health principles, public health safety standards, food safety, sanitation, and water quality regulations.
  • Ability to assist in conducting inspections, collecting data, and maintaining records.
  • Strong attention to detail and good organizational skills.
  • Ability to learn and apply environmental health regulations and enforcement procedures.
  • Effective communication skills to assist facility operators and the public.
  • Ability to complete on-the-job training and coursework to obtain certification as a Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) within a specified time.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience participating in Hometown Health activities preferred.
  • Frequent in-state travel may be required.
  • A valid driver's license is required.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in conducting routine inspections of food establishments, water systems, sanitation facilities, and other public health environments to ensure compliance with health regulations.
  • Identify and report health and safety violations to senior inspectors, making recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Collect and analyze samples of food, water, and other materials for testing purposes.
  • Assist in preparing inspection reports, documenting violations, and tracking corrective actions taken.
  • Participate in public health outreach and educational efforts by providing basic information on environmental health practices to the public and businesses.
  • Respond to public inquiries and complaints regarding environmental health concerns.
