About The Position

The Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Specialist II, under general supervision, provides specialized knowledge in the operation and support of assigned area within an environmental safety program. Acts independently ensuring work complies with program procedures.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Four years of experience in an environmental health and safety field or related
  • Working knowledge of environmental, safety, and health rules, regulations, and standards
  • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
  • This position is security sensitive
  • This position requires compliance with state and federal laws/codes and Texas A&M University System/TAMU policies, regulations, rules and procedures
  • All tasks and job responsibilities must be performed safely without injury to self or others in compliance with System and University safety requirements

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in a safety-related discipline such as: industrial hygiene, fire safety, occupational safety or occupational health
  • Texas Commission of Fire Protection (TCFP) certification
  • Class “C” vehicle operator’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment

Responsibilities

  • Assists with inspections of fire and life safety equipment, such as fire extinguishers and AEDs
  • Assist with fire drills and any special requests, like replacing extinguishers, AEDs or any other safety related needs at the facility
  • Coordinates and performs safety inspections to ensure a safe environment that is compliant with rules, codes, and regulations applicable to EHS.
  • Performs follow-up inspections as needed
  • Coordinates fire drills and conducts fire extinguisher and AED inspections
  • Responds to general safety inquiries
  • Attends project and committee meetings
  • Monitors equipment certification expiration
  • Assist with issuing permits
  • Serves as an EHS point of contact on campus
  • These duties may require driving from site to site, using a University vehicle.
  • Identifies and collects hazardous waste
  • Removes hazardous waste materials from laboratories
  • Tracks chemical waste production to monitor generator status
  • Prepares and maintains records and reports pertaining to assigned duties
  • Enters and tracks inspection findings using various software platforms to generate reports
  • Assists with inspection questions and needs in response to inspection reports
  • Assists in the development and delivery of safety education and awareness programs
  • Participates in training and development opportunities
  • Performs incident investigations as needed
  • Provides written reports as requested with cause and corrective action needed
  • Responds with other EHS personnel to emergencies and assists emergency responders as needed
