About The Position

ReaderLink is North America’s largest book distributor with over 70,000 customer store locations. We move over 325,000,000 books per year and work with over 700 retailers and 500 publishers. We are currently recruiting for an Environmental Health & Safety Director (EHS) based in our Romeoville, IL distribution center. The EHS Director will be responsible for leading occupational safety and health programs and initiatives, environmental reporting and security related programs across all North America Distribution Centers and corporate offices. This position will support a standardized approach across all locations by utilizing a 'hands on' approach to work with employees and management to instill a strong EHS culture.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in EHS, Risk Management, Industrial Hygiene, Safety, Engineering or similar required.
  • Eight (8) plus years’ experience working in a distribution environment.
  • EHS training programs - Workers Compensation - OSHA, EPA, City, County, and state recordkeeping requirements and overall compliance.
  • Solid safety experience overseeing multiple facilities.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Project management and prioritization skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to work within a large, complex, matrixed organization.
  • Ability to exert influence without direct-line authority.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, team environment.
  • Maintain harmonious working relations with employees from all departments and management from all levels.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all aspects of the Company's EHS and activity and ensure that they are implemented consistently across the company.
  • Interact and work with employees from all levels within the organization to build a safety culture based on employee engagement and a goal of zero incidents.
  • Manage, oversee, and maintain the Environmental and Health and Safety programs.
  • Responsible for the EHS operations and practices to reduce the risk of injuries or losses and to maintain safety and environment compliance and education throughout all locations.
  • Monitor, evaluate and review existing, new, and upcoming EHS legislation and ensure that the company has systems and procedures in place to meet legal compliance.
  • Conduct regular regional safety team calls, and in person meetings to discuss progress, strategy, and new trends.
  • Lead effective injury and claim management, WC cost analysis and cost containment by partnering with clinics, claim adjustors, and internal teams.
  • Establish safety KPIs to foster a safety culture and a reduction of workplace injuries across the organization.
  • Ensure that safety incident data, alerts and other reports are fully distributed throughout the company.
  • Ensure training is conducted in areas such as health, safety and environmental laws and regulations, hazardous condition monitoring, and use of safety equipment.
  • Work proactively with leaders and other key staff to establish and maintain a program of continuous improvement in the management of Health and Safety.
  • Ensure that rigorous risk assessment and accident management systems are in place to enable staff to undertake risk assessment processes to identify hazards.
  • Ensure that appropriate records are maintained in compliance with legal requirements and that necessary notices are displayed and reviewed.
  • Lead investigation of accidents and injuries to determine root cause and preventive measures.
  • Oversee compliance audits taking proactive measures to remediate all adverse EHS conditions.
  • Conduct inspections and enforce adherence to laws and regulations governing health and safety.
  • Manage action steps in response to internal, third party, government and/or insurance audits.
  • Manage facilities audits, equipment, and processes to evaluate operational effectiveness.
  • Maintain the accident and ‘near miss’ database and prepare reports for EHS Committee and Company.
  • Develop and conduct ongoing testing of emergency procedures including emergency evacuation, fire/tornado drills, first responder team.
  • Function as a liaison with outside organizations, such as fire departments, police departments, and rescue teams.
