About The Position

The Environmental Engineer Specialist in the Groundwater Mining and Industrial Permits Unit, will utilize applied engineering knowledge and skills to conduct reviews of Aquifer Protection Program (APP) permit applications for mines and various industrial facilities. In this role, you will research, plan, and perform engineering duties in the prevention, control, and remediation of environmental hazards using various engineering disciplines to conduct reviews and write permits in accordance with Arizona’s environmental regulations. This position is available for remote work on a full-time basis within Arizona (including virtual office arrangements). Requirements

  • Knowledge of mining operations and/or various industrial processes. Experience with tailings dams or leach pads is preferred.
  • Knowledge of Agency policies and processes; interpret and understand environmental regulations, investigation techniques and statistical analysis.
  • Knowledge of Project Management Principles.
  • Strong communication skills (written, oral, and interpersonal) and ability to work effectively in a team-based collaborative environment.
  • Attention to detail, quality assurance and control, and adherence to standard work.
  • Microsoft and Google Suite skills and strong ability to use technology.
  • Professional communication, research, customer service/outreach, advanced problem-solving, and facilitation.
  • Ability to follow guidance documents, standard operating procedures, and other technical instructions in performance of tasks.
  • Ability to prepare clear, concise and accurate reports; summarize completed tasks or evaluations orally and in written communication.
  • Ability to balance, prioritize and organize multiple tasks and complete assignments by applicable deadlines; ability to synthesize feedback and adjust plans accordingly.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Civil, Mining, or Chemical Engineering.
  • Level 2: Requires 2 years’ experience (Master’s or Doctorate degree may substitute for two years of experience).
  • Level 3: Requires 5 years’ experience (Master’s degree may substitute for two years of experience. Doctorate may substitute for four years of experience).
  • “Engineer in training” certification through the Arizona Board of Technical Registration or equivalent organization in reciprocal jurisdiction or Professional Engineering certification through the AZ Board of Technical Registration or an equivalent organization is preferred for Level 3.
  • This position requires occasional travel for site visits/inspections and in-person meetings that are held at the Phoenix office.

Responsibilities

  • Review and evaluate moderately complex permit applications, reports, facility designs, plans of moderate complexity and cost estimates for mining and industrial facilities.
  • Participate in site visits, data evaluation, inspections, and investigations regarding environmental topics.
  • Perform complex environmental calculations based on provided methodologies.
  • Provide rigorous technical guidance to mining and industrial facilities, responsible parties and individuals to ensure compliance with environmental laws and regulations.
  • Assist in preparing environmental guidance documents.
  • Performs or leads projects under direction of senior staff or a manager.
  • Respond to customer inquiries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Provide compliance assistance to responsible parties while conversing with a variety of subject matter experts including contractors, senior engineers, geologists, hydrogeologists, and others.
  • Accelerate resolution of engineering issues through collaboration and assistance.
  • Provide innovative solutions to reoccurring compliance issues.
  • Utilize Lean concepts to drive ongoing continuous improvement.
