About The Position

This is a restricted position, which is solely funded by the Drinking Water State Revolving Fund. The availability of funding is scheduled for review annually and periodically thereafter (continuous renewal). Continued employment is contingent on the continued availability of funds. Under Section 32.1-167-176 of the Code of Virginia and the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) is required to provide safe drinking water regulations. These functions are initiated and monitored by the District Engineers assigned to various regions that range in size.

Requirements

  • Working knowledge and experience in biology, microbiology, chemistry, engineering principles and practices, and math.
  • Demonstrated ability to make sound engineering decisions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, including written and verbal communication, as well as the ability to present before groups and in public meetings and produce technical reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and interpret law, regulations, policies, and technical documents.
  • Ability to supervise people.
  • Considerable engineering working knowledge pertaining to drinking water.

Nice To Haves

  • Virginia Professional Engineer (PE) license or ability to obtain within 12 months.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting inspections and sanitary surveys (comprehensive assessments) of waterworks.
  • Interpreting federal and state regulations applicable to waterworks owners and operators.
  • Providing guidance to owners and operators to ensure they achieve compliance with health and safety standards.
  • Providing assistance to help waterworks return to compliance in cases where they violate the standards.
  • Performing evaluations of engineering documents associated with the design and construction of new or expanded waterworks to ensure construction will meet appropriate public health standards.
  • Training operators in the operation and maintenance of waterworks.
  • Providing information about drinking water quality to the general public.
