About The Position

The Environmental Engineer III position at the City of Chicago's Department of Public Health is a critical role focused on enforcing environmental protection laws and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and municipal regulations. This position is open to the public and current city employees within specific bargaining units. The mission of the Department is to promote and improve health by engaging with residents and communities to implement effective policies and services. Under general supervision, the Environmental Engineer III will supervise and participate in various activities related to environmental permitting and inspection, ensuring that the city's environmental standards are upheld. In this role, the engineer will be responsible for assigning, coordinating, and supervising the work of professional and technical personnel engaged in enforcing environmental protection laws. This includes reviewing site inspection reports for completeness and appropriateness, supervising re-inspections to ensure compliance, and coordinating technical assistance during environmental incidents. The engineer will also oversee the enforcement of citations and remediation recommendations for violations of the City's Environmental Protection Code, assist staff in conducting inspections of repeat and gross violations, and participate in developing guidelines for environmental inspections. The position requires a proactive approach to training staff in new techniques for detecting and assessing environmental pollutants, as well as participating in the review of permit applications for industrial processing equipment. The engineer will perform engineering calculations to determine emission rates of pollutants, prepare comprehensive reports on inspection activities, and investigate complaints of alleged violations. Additionally, the engineer may be required to testify in court as an expert witness on environmental issues and make recommendations for new equipment purchases. This position is essential for maintaining the health and safety of the community through effective environmental management.
