About The Position

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Disability Education, the Environmental Educator is responsible for the development and implementation of education programs for students in the K-12 educational environment and for visiting groups from the community. The Environmental Educator conducts programs for educators and other special programs as required.

Requirements

  • One year of professional experience related to the functions of the position, or equivalency as determined by the appointing authority.
  • Experience working with children in a classroom environment strongly preferred.
  • Field knowledge of flora and fauna required.
  • Knowledge of animal care, ecosystems, and/or environmental issues preferred.
  • Familiarity with NGSS and State Content Standards.
  • Innovative teaching techniques/strategies.
  • Ability to conduct classes outdoors under varied conditions.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy/knowledge of current educational technology.
  • Ability to assist in the production of literature for program use.
  • Ability to travel to various facilities and present programs.

Responsibilities

  • Implement educational programs and enhance lesson plans correlated to State and Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
  • Facilitate teacher-training workshops in-house and in schools; develop and implement traveling programs to schools, nursing homes, libraries, and hospitals.
  • Respond to public inquiries following established guidelines and contribute to team effort by completing tasks on an as-needed assigned basis.
  • Establish liaison and maintain cooperative working relationships with MEC staff whose functions impact assigned responsibilities.
  • Consult with supervisor on a regular basis to report progress on assignments, report problems, and resolve problems.
  • Wear designated uniform shirts when presenting a program to school groups and the public.
