About The Position

The Environmental Education Coordinator supports the City of Arvada’s environmental education and outreach efforts by developing, coordinating, and implementing programs, activities, and events for school groups, community organizations, and nature center visitors. This position also creates interpretive opportunities along Arvada’s trails and provides exceptional customer service to foster community engagement and environmental awareness. Work Schedule: 30-40 hours/week for no more than 1200 hours (Start Date 03/02/2026 - End Date 11/20/2026)

Requirements

  • Working knowledge of environmental interpretation and education.
  • Initiative to recognize, recommend and manage projects or programs that meet the Nature Center’s mission.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, customer service, and time management skills.
  • Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
  • First Aid/AED/CPR certification required within 90 days of hire.
  • A valid Colorado driver’s license and acceptable driving record is required
  • High School/GED
  • One (1) or more years of experience providing environmental education or interpretive programming.
  • Must complete training mandated by the Colorado Department of Early Childhood Education upon hire.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

Nice To Haves

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental or Natural Sciences, Education, or a related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of water conserving vegetation is preferred.
  • Basic understanding of regional natural resources.
  • Experience using online registration and management software, or ability to learn.
  • Classroom management skills a plus.
  • Comfortable working with animal ambassadors such as reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates.
  • Experience working or volunteering in a leadership role with youth and adults is preferred.
  • Certified Interpretive Guide (CIG) certification is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Creates, leads, and assists with public programs for varying ages, both indoors and outdoors, across Arvada.
  • Leads school curriculum-based programs for K-5 students at the Nature Center and at school outreaches.
  • Provides informal interpretation while roving in the park and along Arvada’s trails to engage visitors and enhance their understanding of natural resources .
  • Assists with summer camps by delivering creative, age-appropriate activities and ensuring the health and safety of all participants. Acts as camp instructor as needed.
  • Creates and presents engaging interpretive activities at events and booths as a Nature Center representative.
  • Oversees center operations during public hours as an interpretive ambassador, providing an enjoyable visitor experience.
  • Participates in all-staff projects as needed.
  • Assists with habitat enhancement, planting native species, removal of invasive species, citizen science projects, and wildlife camera operations.
  • Monitors safety, security and cleanliness of center and surrounding site, bringing issues to the attention of the Director or appropriate City staff.
  • Works with, coordinates, and trains volunteers of varying backgrounds and experience to complete tasks, projects, and programs.
  • Travels to and attends team and organizational meetings, training, events and activities and appropriately and professionally represents the department.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours as assigned, which will include evenings and weekends, including a minimum of two Saturdays per month during the warm season
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
