About The Position

Environmental Designer Engineering (Utility Related) Role Summary: The Environmental Designer supports utility, distribution and streetlight lighting programs by leading environmental and permitting reviews required for construction. This role ensures projects comply with federal, state, and local environmental regulations while maintaining delivery schedules. The Environmental Designer works closely with utility clients, engineering design teams, permitting agencies, and construction partners to identify environmental constraints early, prepare permit packages, and resolve issues that could delay installation. This position is well suited for a candidate with hands-on experience in utility infrastructure projects, environmental compliance, and agency coordination who can balance regulatory rigor with practical project execution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Planning, Biology, or related field.
  • 3+ years of experience supporting environmental review and permitting for utility, transportation, or public infrastructure projects.
  • Working knowledge of environmental regulations relevant to utility construction
  • Strong written communication skills for technical documentation and agency correspondence.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects in parallel and meet utility-driven schedules.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, site plans, and GIS or environmental mapping data.
  • Experience specifically with streetlight, distribution, or telecom infrastructure projects.
  • GIS experience (ArcGIS or similar) for environmental screening and mapping.
  • Regulatory judgment and risk awareness.
  • Practical problem solving.

Responsibilities

  • Perform environmental screenings and reviews for streetlight and small-scale distribution projects.
  • Identify environmental constraints such as floodplains, protected species, cultural resources, Karst zones, etc.
  • Determine permitting requirements under state environmental regulations, local ordinances, and utility-specific standards.
  • Prepare environmental documentation and constraint maps to support design and construction.
  • Coordinate environmental requests with Engineering and Specialist vendors to deliver documentation from all open projects in a fast-paced utility environment with multiple concurrent projects.
  • Maintain permit status logs and communicate risks to project managers .
  • Review engineering designs and site layouts to ensure environmental compliance.
  • Recommend design adjustments to avoid or minimize environmental impacts.
  • Collaborate with distribution designers, project managers, and construction teams to align environmental requirements with build schedules.
  • Support responses to agency requests for additional information and field verification when required.
  • Assist with audit preparation and documentation for utility compliance reviews.
