The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP's water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City. The Bureau of Public Affairs and Communication is comprised of several units that manage the public information functions of the Agency in New York City and its Watersheds. The ECO unit is the outreach arm of the agency and coordinates bureau response to businesses and other city agencies. Direct engagement and environmental education with the residential community is also a critical function of the unit. The ECO unit conducts targeted in-person and virtual outreach across communities. Working under the supervision of the Environmental Compliance Outreach Unit (ECO), the Environmental Compliance Outreach Intern will be responsible for assisting the unit to conduct environmental education outreach to various industries in targeted locations across the City, helping to fulfill state and federally mandated community engagement work. The liaison will also gain valuable experience and knowledge in all aspects of public engagement, city government, environmental regulations and interacting with the business community.
