About The Position

Under direction, performs technical environmental inspection work. Work of the class involves performing removal, encapsulation, and repair of asbestos containing material in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations; and related environmental inspection and control work. Employees conduct on-site inspections of contractors performing asbestos removal work; conduct investigations related to asbestos concerns and compliance; write detailed reports and summaries of inspection and investigation findings; conduct training programs to familiarize building service, maintenance and other employees with asbestos programs and compliance requirements; and assist in other environmental health work and inspections, such as air monitoring; lead in water, paint and soil; and removal of hazardous materials. Physical Demands: Ability to lift heavy objects. Ability to work in dirty, dusty and uncomfortable conditions and performs work requiring considerable walking, climbing, carrying of tools and test equipment, and use of scaffolds. Ability to work while wearing negative pressure respirator and to pass a physical examination verifying this ability. Special Requirements: Ability to work overtime including evenings, weekends and holidays, as required. Ability to respond to emergency work requirements at any time.

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of the standard procedures, practices, techniques, tools, and terminology of the field of asbestos removal and control.
  • Knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, including and understanding of potential hazards involved in asbestos abatement.
  • Excellent human relations and communications skills including the ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Ability to read construction plans, effectively complete asbestos related inspections and investigations, maintain records, and complete written reports.
  • Ability to train others.
  • Ability to enforce compliance with building codes and contract specifications with firmness and tact.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to meet the seven core competencies of the Supporting Services Professional Growth System (SSPGS).
  • High School or GED diploma required.
  • Considerable experience in asbestos removal and control required.
  • Possession of a valid Maryland Class D driver^s license or equivalent.
  • Certificate of successful completion of an EPA Initial and Refresher asbestos worker, including Maryland License for Asbestos Abatement Worker.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates degree preferred.
  • College coursework in biological, chemical or physical sciences preferred.
  • Experience in supervision of asbestos removal and control work and in environmental health investigations and inspections preferred.
  • Training and license as Asbestos Supervisor preferred.
  • Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
