About The Position

Environmental/Health Manager III, Minimum Salary: $65,539 per year, (Salary is commensurate with education & experience) USCA Operations To initiate, develop & manage health, safety & environmental programs for the USCA campus under the advise of the USCA Senior University Facilities Executive, with the cooperation of the campus faculty & staff responsible for implementing similar programs for individual departments or areas. Implements Planning and Operations Accident/Incident program. Conducts safety equipment inspections, process inspections and facility inspections to determine compliance with departmental safety procedures and OSHA. Performs support functions for departmental safety and OSHA compliance programs. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: Knowledge of the methods of environmental monitoring & the principles, methods & techniques for correcting occupational & environmental health hazards. Ability to interpret & apply federal & state health & safety codes & regulations. Ability to prepare training materials, & clear, concise, comprehensive reports. Ability to speak in public & train others using hands on techniques. Ability to work harmoniously with others. Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials: Requires SC fire marshal or emergency management certification. Required to be a certified AHA or Red Cross first aid/CPR/AED instructor or the ability to secure these certifications within six (6) months of hire date. Minimum requirements: Bachelor's degree in a job related field and 3 or more years of job related experience, which may be substituted by an equivalent combination of job related certification, training, education, and/or experience. Preferred: A BS degree in Natural or Physical Sciences, Public Health, Engineering or a related technical field with three years or more of experience in managing an environmental health & safety program. Responsibilities

  • Detects & identifies potential occupational health hazards. Investigates health & safety concerns, accidents & violations of environmental health/safety policies. Ensures corrective actions are taken to eliminate problematic conditions. Keeps records available for audits.
  • Assists in the management of USCA waste disposal & recycling programs. Coordinates hazardous waste handling for all campus departments in accordance with state & federal regulations. Maintains the hazardous material log & material manifests. Coordinates and/or performs chemical inventory and lab safety inspections with Science department to ensure OSHA/EPA compliance. Assists the Housekeeping Department with the selection, handling, storage & distribution of hazardous & nonhazardous chemicals & supplies.
  • Conducts required orientation and annual safety training for faculty & staff as required by USCA, OSHA & other agencies including CPR training. Develops education programs including vehicle driver safety seminars & maintains training records. Performs yearly lab hood air tests to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations.
  • Ensures fire alarms, detection systems, sprinkler systems, portable fire extinguishers & other safety systems are inspected, tested & serviced at the required frequencies. Ensures elevators, swimming pools & other plant equipment are inspected in accordance with applicable codes. Performs yearly fire safety audit with local Fire Marshall and resolves any violations.
  • Reviews state & federal regulations & life safety codes to determine their applicability to the USCA campus. Consults with experts within the University system, state & local authorities to develop and/or revise written policies & procedures. Prepares & disseminates updates to the USCA Emergency Action Plan ad hoc safety committees.
  • Provides technical support to departments within the USC Aiken and contractors, to include, but not limited to: OSHA and Environmental Compliance, and CPR/AED/FA etc. Implements, inspects, audits and evaluates contractor compliance programs. Works with Facility Executive contractor's representatives concerning inspection results and assists in developing corrective action plans to remedy deficiencies. Tracks results.
  • Monitors campus energy usage. Evaluates opportunities for improvement in energy conservation & prioritizes projects. Prepares grant proposals and recommends strategies for project implementation.
  • Reviews the compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act & makes recommendations regarding actions necessary to improve campus accessibility. Coordinates any indoor air quality testing and remediation. Provides grant support for grants related to FEMA, OSHA and other safety authorities.
  • Maintains Health and Safety Website with OSHA, lab safety, and environmental compliance information.
  • Response to campus emergencies such as: chemical spills, blood spills, and etc. Complete all other assigned duties as required.
