About The Position

As a top-rated insurance carrier, Auto-Owners is seeking a motivated underwriting trainee to join their team. This position involves performing and applying insurance coverage, rules, and guidelines to execute the underwriting decision-making process in accordance with the company's underwriting philosophy. The role includes comprehensive training and development through the completion of the company's underwriter training program for the assigned line of insurance. The underwriting trainee will learn various insurance coverages and contracts, along with the company's philosophy and procedures, to make informed underwriting decisions. This includes reading, interpreting, and reacting to documents such as policies, manuals, forms, and endorsements to understand their meaning and use. The trainee will also be responsible for assembling information, developing opinions, and clearly expressing decisions using sound reasoning and judgment. Analyzing loss experience, financial conditions, and physical characteristics of risks is a key part of the role, as is acquiring a working knowledge of supporting sections of the underwriting department. Effective communication with independent agents and other associates is essential, and the trainee will participate in and successfully complete the company’s underwriter training program. The position offers a merit-based work-from-home program based on job responsibilities, allowing for flexibility after initial in-person training, as defined by the leadership team.
