The Machinist's Mate Nuclear (MMN) is a critical role in the Navy responsible for operating and maintaining the nuclear propulsion systems of aircraft carriers and submarines. This position involves ensuring the safe and efficient operation of steam-powered propulsion plants and auxiliary machinery, which includes steam turbines, pumps, and refrigeration systems. MMNs work in high-pressure environments, both at sea and ashore, and undergo extensive training to develop the necessary technical skills in nuclear physics and reactor engineering.
