About The Position

Wiss, Janney, Elstner Associates, Inc. (WJE) is seeking an exceptional entry-level corrosion-focused materials engineering associate to join our Materials Engineering group at the Janney Technical Center (JTC) in Northbrook, Illinois. With offices across the country, a growing international presence, and unparalleled laboratory and testing capabilities, WJE is a global firm of engineers, architects, and materials scientists committed to helping solve, repair, and avoid problems in the built world. Our JTC's Materials Engineering Group works at the intersection of materials and structural engineering - solving challenging materials engineering problems that impact the performance of structures. The Corrosion-Focused Materials Engineering Associate will contribute to projects related to the assessment, prediction, and mitigation of corrosion and other deterioration mechanisms affecting the durability and performance of reinforced concrete and steel structures. You will spend almost as much time in the field and laboratory, up close and personal with our projects, as you will in the office. This role will require periodic travel as well as the willingness to work overtime during peak periods. As you grow into this position, you will assume primary responsibility for key aspects of projects and complete assignments with limited oversight.

  • Master's degree or higher in related engineering field (civil, structural, corrosion, materials, or similar), with excellent academic performance; applicable work experience will be considered in lieu of a graduate-level degree
  • Experience and/or sustained interest related to corrosion and/or cathodic protection (e.g., coursework, internships, or work experience) is considered a plus
  • A passion and the curiosity for investigating and solving materials-related problems in existing structures
  • Effective technical, graphical, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and adapt to changing demands, while maintaining a high standard of excellence, integrity, and attention to detail
  • Ability and interest in performing work in the field and to travel outside local area

Responsibilities

  • Complete on-site investigations and condition assessments of structures to evaluate problematic conditions, including survey and documentation of distress, non-destructive testing, and material sampling
  • Coordinate and/or execute laboratory testing of material samples
  • Frequently perform testing of the durability properties of concrete and collaborate with WJE's material scientists on chemical and petrographic analyses
  • Model and analyze the future condition of structures, including use of WJE CASLE, our proprietary service life modeling software
  • Design repair mitigation schemes, potentially including cathodic protection systems
  • Assist with drafting and preparing conceptual, preliminary, and final client deliverables, including written reports
  • Perform in-house research and development in support of WJE's growing durability practice
  • Eagerly learn and train on the above skills and tasks

Benefits

  • Comprehensive health and financial benefits including robust and affordable health plans for employees and their families
  • Generous 401(k) matching
  • Time off to care for yourself and others
