About The Position

The Cooking Enrichment Teacher plays a key role in delivering engaging, hands-on culinary experiences within the after-school program. This position is responsible for designing and facilitating structured, skill-based cooking classes that are developmentally appropriate for elementary and/or middle school students. Through thoughtfully planned lessons, the Cooking Enrichment Teacher fosters creativity, confidence, and practical life skills while creating a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment. This role requires strong organization and preparation, including developing weekly lesson plans, building and maintaining cooking slide decks, sourcing and preparing ingredients, and ensuring all materials and equipment are ready for each class. The Cooking Enrichment Teacher is also responsible for maintaining high standards of cleanliness and food safety, including proper food handling, classroom setup and cleanup, and adherence to program protocols. In addition to instruction, the Cooking Enrichment Teacher actively supports student behavior and engagement through clear expectations and consistent classroom management. They collaborate closely with Team Captains and site staff, communicate student progress or concerns, and contribute to the overall success of the program. This role is ideal for individuals who are passionate about cooking, enjoy working with youth, and are committed to creating meaningful, skill-building experiences for students.

Requirements

  • Have experience in a cooking setting
  • Have experience working with elementary and/or middle school-aged youth.
  • Are creative, engaging, and enthusiastic about sharing their expertise.
  • Demonstrate strong classroom or group management skills.
  • Are dependable, punctual, and professional.
  • Are flexible and able to adapt lessons as needed.
  • Are committed to working throughout the full session or school year (as assigned).
  • Hold a high school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required, depending on subject area).
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DOJ/FBI Live Scan clearance
  • Proof of negative TB test within required timeframe
  • Ability to attend required PlayCV trainings and meetings
  • Ability to work assigned schedule and program calendar
  • Ability to stand, walk, and move continuously throughout program hours (including outdoor play and transitions between locations)
  • Ability to drive to different school sites and the HQ office in Castro Valley, CA
  • Ability to actively engage with students through physical activities such as games, sports, playground supervision, and movement-based enrichment
  • Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, sit on the floor, and get up from the floor frequently
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and/or pull program supplies, equipment, or materials weighing up to approximately 5–30 pounds
  • Ability to visually supervise large groups of children and respond quickly to dynamic situations
  • Ability to hear and respond to student needs, verbal cues, and emergency signals in indoor and outdoor environments
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Ability to sustain focus and energy while supervising students for extended periods of time

Responsibilities

  • Plan and facilitate high-quality enrichment classes aligned with the Cooking class.
  • Create structured lesson plans with recipes that are developmentally appropriate for elementary and/or middle school students.
  • Prepare for the Cooking lesson
  • Add the recipe, ingredients, and lesson content to the cooking slide deck template each week
  • Ensure that the slide deck for the upcoming week is completed no later than the Friday before
  • Share the recipes and ingredients with the Director and advise if there are any changes
  • Pull the cooking equipment and supplies for each class daily
  • Research, test and prepare cooking theme, recipes, and ingredients
  • Place food orders and grocery shopping
  • Set up and clean up the classroom
  • Wash ingredients prior to students arriving (if applicable)
  • Complete any food prep needed prior to students arriving (if applicable)
  • Clean the classroom to the same standard or better than arrival
  • Wash all dishes and equipment
  • Ensure that food waste is not disposed of in school drains
  • Instruct Cooking class for 1 hour and 15 minutes per class
  • Maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Manage student behavior using clear expectations and consistent classroom management strategies.
  • Ensure student safety at all times, including maintaining proper supervision and following all PlayCV safety protocols.
  • Communicate student progress, concerns, or incidents to the Team Captain and/or PlayCV leadership.
  • Collaborate with Team Captains and site staff to support overall program success.
  • Participate in required PlayCV training and meetings as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
