About The Position

The Alternative Ed. English Teacher provides unique and specialized services for students in grades 6–12 who require a structured environment focused on strengthening academic skills and attendance, aligned instruction, social/emotional support, and behavioral support. Teachers will be expected to provide the following services/support to students: advisory check-ins, academic and elective instruction through explicit and real-world applications, social skills training, goal setting, executive skills training, and conflict resolution.

Requirements

  • Candidates must hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in English and must hold, or be eligible to hold, a Virginia teaching license.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills are essential.
  • Candidates must possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and should demonstrate a commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in teaching English/Humanities and providing academic, behavioral, and social/emotional support to students is highly desirable.
  • The candidate should possess strong classroom management skills and demonstrate the ability to work with students who lack motivation and/or exhibit challenging behaviors.
  • Knowledge of effective instructional strategies, and techniques for alternative education settings.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement lesson plans that align with the curriculum and meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Provide explicit English instruction and blended instruction in additional subject areas as needed.
  • Monitor and assess student progress, providing regular feedback and adjusting instructional strategies as needed.
  • Implement behavior management strategies and interventions to support positive student behavior.
  • Collaborate with the on-site administrator, high/middle school counselors, high/middle school administrators, and other staff to develop and implement behavior intervention/support plans, and other educational plans as appropriate.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of student attendance, grades, and behavior.
  • Communicate regularly with parents or guardians to provide updates on student progress and address any concerns.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices in alternative education and behavior management.
  • Create a safe, inclusive, and supportive classroom environment that fosters student engagement and learning.
  • Support students in developing social and emotional skills necessary for success in and out of the classroom.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
