About The Position

Livonia Public Schools is seeking a highly qualified ESL teacher for our Adult Education Program who will be able to develop a vibrant and engaging program of instruction for all ability levels of interested students. The teacher will identify and implement best practices in instruction and student achievement, including the utilization and understanding of spoken and written English. DISTRICT OVERVIEW: Livonia Public Schools employs approximately 1,900 staff members, serving approximately 13,100 students pre-K - post secondary. There are 15 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, 3 high schools, 1 career technical center, 1 early childhood center, and 1 vocational and transition center in the school district. The annual budget for Livonia Public Schools is $185 million, with a state funding of $10,000 per pupil. Requirements

Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with endorsement in NS and TESOK preferred.
A major in the subject area is strongly preferred, with a minimum of a bachelor's degree
A passionate commitment to improving learning for all students

Skills in individualizing instruction
Evidence of ability to establish positive working relationships with all stakeholders, including colleagues, parents, and booster clubs
Superior verbal and written communication skills

Responsibilities

Evaluates students through the use of formal and informal evaluation procedures to assess strengths and challenges of the students
Provides assistance to help students appropriately develop written and spoken English language
Prepares progress reports and yearly evaluations; monitoring and communicating goal progress
Adapts the curriculum, instruction, and lessons to provide individual, small-group, or remedial instruction to meet the needs of the individual student
Uses educational software and websites to assist students in acquiring English and improving content area skills
Produces and maintains an inventory of classroom learning materials
Familiarizes bilingual students with environmental and cultural characteristics
Serves as a cultural liaison person between families of different cultures and the school
Administers the CASAS test (or equivalent state assessment) and screener to students
Maintains student records in accordance with school, district, state, and federal guidelines and statutes
Keeps abreast of new developments in the field by reading journals and publications, attending professional seminars or conferences, and discussing problems of mutual interest with others in the field
Encourages students to think independently and to express original ideas
Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide a safe and productive classroom environment
Identifies student needs and works collaboratively with other professional staff members in assessing and assisting students
Communicates with students regarding progress
Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor
