About The Position

The English as a Second Language Instructor is responsible for delivering instruction, administering standardized assessments and providing career and academic awareness and exploration activities for adult English as a Second Language (ESL) learners in the community. The instructor may teach basic mathematics; reading, writing, listening/speaking in English; career exploration and workforce education; and digital literacy in multiple contexts below the postsecondary level. Some instruction may be customized for local employer needs and take place at an employer’s site. Delivery of instruction is primarily in-person, but opportunities to teach remotely using Zoom may occur.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree with experience teaching English language learners; an ESL concentration or certification, or TESOL certification, is preferred but not required.
  • Experience teaching adult learners is preferred.
  • Computer experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, data entry, artificial intelligence (AI) and email required.
  • Proficiency in utilizing vetted artificial intelligence (AI) is preferred.
  • The ability to enhance AI skills will be required.
  • Experience managing file sharing with Google Drive and using the Zoom virtual meeting platform preferred but not required.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills to prioritize tasks based on project deadlines.
  • Ability to type accurately and maintain a high level of productivity.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with colleagues, co-workers, community agency personnel, and students/trainees.
  • Ability to develop and maintain positive and collaborative relationships using tact and diplomacy and remain calm in unpredictable situations.
  • Current, approved Act 34 (PA State Police), Act 151 (PA Child Abuse Registry), and Act 114-FBI Fingerprint clearances are required and must be renewed at appropriate, specific intervals pursuant to Act 153 of 2014 (revised Act 15 of 2015).
  • Current, approved Act 126 Mandated Reporter Training certificate showing completion of a minimum of three (3) hours of training every five (5) years.
  • Completion of in-person and online professional development activities as required by grant funder and the CSIU.
  • Attend relevant conferences, trainings, and in-services to maintain and enhance professional development as recommended by the immediate supervisor or required by the position.
  • Sedentary: Able to sit for extended periods of time but may involve walking and standing (periodically as required); able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
  • Dexterity: Finger movements (computer keyboard, calculator, office equipment); eye-hand coordination.
  • Audio-Visual requirements: Within normal range, with or without correction.
  • Mental demands: Steady response to unpredictable situations, ability to remain calm and productive during stressful situations; demonstrate independent judgment and discretion with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and a safe manner.
  • Must be willing and able to drive to locations throughout the CSIU service area and to state training events when required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide English language instruction in a variety of content areas, contexts, and instructional formats.
  • Develop standard-aligned and competency-based lesson plans; design interactive and engaging learning activities for adult learners.
  • Implement research-based teaching and learning strategies appropriate for adult English language learner, in classroom and distance-learning environments, including the use of technology.
  • Direct the work of volunteer classroom aides to assist students.
  • Administer formal and informal assessments to determine academic and workplace skills development needs and to document progress.
  • Develop and update individual learning plans with students; engage learners in goal- setting, career awareness, and career exploration activities.
  • Conduct new student orientation and intake sessions.
  • Maintain accurate and complete program paperwork, student files, and attendance
  • Participate in continuous program improvement and professional development activities.
  • Work with other staff members to promote program services and recruit adult learners.
  • Work cooperatively with program partners and community agencies to increase awareness of program services.
  • Other program-related duties as assigned by immediate supervisor or designee.
