About The Position

Central to the University’s commitment to public education is the UChicago Charter School (UCCS). UCCS began in 1998 with a group of committed educators, who, working in partnership with the University of Chicago, founded the North Kenwood/Oakland Campus, a prekindergarten to fifth grade school. UCCS opened its second elementary campus, Donoghue, in 2005. UCCS’ first middle school and high school campus was established in 2006 for students from grades six to 12 at the Woodlawn Campus. All three of UCCS’ school buildings are within 10 minutes of the University of Chicago campus. Today, the three UChicago Charter campuses, and their 200+ staff members, offer over 1300 neighborhood children on Chicago’s South Side a pre-K through grade 12 superhighway that empowers students to achieve excellence at every level, cultivating critical thinkers and leaders for success in college and in life. Position Summary: The English as a Second language (ESL) Teacher provides instruction to students in grades K-12th in the English Language Learners (ELL) Program. The goal of this position is to guide English Language Learners toward gaining proficiency in listening, speaking, reading and writing. The work will require travel to the North Kenwood/Oakland, Donoghue and Woodlawn campuses. This is a 10-month position.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required, in a field of education strongly preferred.
  • Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with ESL endorsement required
  • At least 3 years teaching experience required, in ESL/bilingual education preferred
  • Ability to maintain a high sense of confidentiality

Responsibilities

  • Provide ESL instruction to students in grades K – 12th
  • Assist in administering required language proficiency and academic achievement tests for determining placement for students along with ongoing monitoring of student progress
  • Assist ELPT in administering ACCESS to EL students
  • Assist in developing appropriate curriculum to help ELL students acquire the English language
  • Ensure all EL components from the state and the district are being implemented in lesson plans and in the classroom
  • Employ a variety of instructional techniques and teaching strategies to meet different aptitudes and interests of students, including whole group (co-teaching)/ small-group or individual learning
  • Assist in gathering and reporting data for reporting requirements and other required reports (to the State, Charter School Board, Department of Education, census, grant applications, annual report, etc)
  • Establish and maintain communication with parents of students in the program
  • Engage parents and families in their student’s learning and act as an ambassador for the school in the community
  • Participate in department meetings
  • Assist and/or provide professional learning in the area of English Language Learners
  • Participate in staff professional development activities and staff meetings
  • Attend IEP, 504, or other related meetings as necessary for student assessment and/or compliance with federal and/or state law
  • Attend and participate in established traditional school-sponsored events and meetings (i.e., back-to-school night, open house, and other activities customarily attended by classroom teachers and/or staff members) which may be outside of regular school hours
  • Contribute productively to UChicago Charter School as a whole
  • Other duties as assigned
