About The Position

Geosyntec has an exciting opportunity for an Engineering Technician to help grow our contaminated site assessment and remediation services in Phoenix or Tucson, Arizona offices. The position is ideal for individuals who enjoy both independent and team-based work in a variety of settings, with an emphasis on measuring and monitoring contamination in the environment. This position is a great opportunity for the technically-minded who are interested in building a career in the environmental construction and consulting fields. In this role, you will compile construction quality assurance (CQA) monitoring data; perform a variety of multi-media sampling efforts; oversee environmental and remediation construction projects; perform operation and maintenance (O&M) for a variety of small and large water and soil treatment systems, and provide additional field and office support to geologists and engineers for a diverse private and public-sector client base. You will work on your own or as part of a larger field support team on site-specific project tasks. The ability and willingness to work outdoors, perform extensive fieldwork, and travel for extensive periods of time, including overnights, weekends, and holidays is required. An interest in building a career in the environmental consulting field is essential. Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED). (required)
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel, and Word software programs. (required)
  • Attention to detail when taking daily field notes and providing feedback to project managers and supervisors (required)
  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance. (required)
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, be self-motivated and possess a strong work ethic. (required)
  • Ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 49 pounds unaided and 50-100 pounds with assistance and/or proper engineering controls. (required)
  • Ability to spend the workday standing and walking across construction sites when needed. (required)
  • Ability to speak and hear, stand, walk, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. (required)
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing (e.g., emails) with peers, subcontractors, supervisors, and clients to report findings, convey ideas and explain observations. (required)
  • Availability for regular field work and overnight travel. (required)
  • Availability for construction-typical scheduling, including frequent early-starts for heat protection (e.g., work from 6:00 AM to 2:00 PM), occasional alternate work weeks (e.g., 10 days on, 4 days off) and rare overnight shifts to accommodate activity at certain facilities (e.g., work from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM)
  • Health & Safety training, medical monitoring, and client-driven drug and background testing. (required – provided by employer)
  • OSHA 10-hour training (preferred but provided if needed)
  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training (preferred but provided if needed)
  • Valid U.S. driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and reliable transportation, for business travel. (required)

Nice To Haves

  • Practical field experience conducting operation and maintenance of mechanical systems including simple troubleshooting of mechanical and electrical systems. (preferred)
  • Experience with multi-media sampling including soil, water, and air. (preferred)
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings, including survey and topographical drawings. (preferred)
  • Experience ensuring field activities comply with construction plans and specifications and the ability to monitor several different types of activities simultaneously. (preferred)
  • Experience with health and safety requirements typical of construction projects, outdoor work in extreme conditions, and harmful chemicals. (preferred)
  • Experience with water treatment systems for drinking or wastewater treatment. (preferred)
  • Exposure to the execution of in-situ and ex-situ remediation projects technologies such as chemical injection technologies, pump and treat systems, and landfill gas recovery systems. (preferred)
  • Experience with the operation of industry-typical monitoring and data collection equipment, including but not limited laptop and handheld computers, Troxler moisture /density gauges, scales, Elkins or GEM, and other equipment. (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Perform multi-media sampling (collection of soil, water, and air samples) in support of investigations, monitoring programs, and other data collection projects.
  • Perform O&M of remediation systems (e.g. groundwater extraction and treatment, soil vapor extraction, and others).
  • Monitor contractor activities on job sites to ensure compliance with relevant contract documents (e.g., technical specifications, construction drawings, sampling plans, CQA plans etc.).
  • Provide CQA observation and monitoring on several types of construction and/or environmental activities on enviro-civil construction sites.
  • Prepare daily and weekly field reports, construction schedules & progress reports.
  • Ensure project documentation is correct and consistent with company policy & procedures.
  • Interact with project personnel (project managers, engineers & clients) and assist in cultivating an integrated team approach through open lines of communication and participation.
  • Assist in the preparation of the final data packages, health and safety documents, and the assembly of report appendices.
  • Observe and abide by the policies and procedures outlined in the site-specific project health and safety plans and the company’s Environmental Health and Safety Management policies and procedures.
  • Perform tasks in other company practice areas including general construction services, environmental sampling, contractor oversight, or construction quality assurance activities, as needed.
  • Perform field and on-site laboratory tests on soil, geosynthetics, aggregates, and other materials primarily associated with landfill and/or waste containment system construction.
  • Drive personal, company, and rental vehicles to client or company project or office sites, and other business locations, as needed.
