About The Position

North Wind Services is actively seeking individuals who can contribute to national security within the science, technology, and engineering fields as part of our supplemental labor team at vital federal research and development installations supporting the Department of Energy. NWS has an established history of contributing to the success of their customer’s mission. Available employment opportunities may range from administrative and logistical support to advanced technical positions. Qualified applicants must be a US citizen, at least 18 years of age, and able to meet pre-employment requirements including any required physicals, drug screen, and/or background investigation to satisfy clearance requirements from the Department of Energy. Successful candidates will be employees of NWS, a premier government contractor charged with employing highly motivated and well-qualified personnel who can advance the missions of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, CA. Though employed by NWS, the employee will take day-to-day direction from technical personnel employed directly by the research laboratories. Pay, benefits, Human Resource, and Employment Management functions are provided by NWS. The Engineering Directorate has an opening in the Materials Engineering Division (MED) for an Engineering Technician VI in the Materials and NDE Section. This is a full-time on-site position that may require occasional overtime and travel.  The successful candidate will use composite and mechanical skills for component fabrication/repair general technical support for new and ongoing programmatic activities working independently or with team members performing component and part fabrication/repair, equipment setup, operations, maintenance, and system testing. The successful candidate will support programmatic activities independently or working with engineers/scientists/technical staff.  Tasks may include, but are not limited to design of parts, components, fixtures, and assemblies; equipment setup and operation; troubleshooting and maintenance; upgrades, modifications; and utilizing common hand tools and machine shop equipment. The successful candidate will work with various materials and chemicals, and classified parts and documents.

Requirements

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. Citizenship.
  • Associate degree in engineering, mechanical, industrial, or manufacturing technology, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience; or a technology related certificate or diploma with related work experience and related course work; or equivalent combination of education and experience in a technical or engineering field that includes mechanical training.
  • Experience working with composite fabrication e.g., aluminum-to-aluminum core, carbon fiber-to-aluminum core sandwich panel construction wet layups, resin infusion, prepreg layup, and vacuum bagging.
  • Intermediate skills and experience using general machine shop equipment and hand tools as hand-held/stationary drills and grinders.
  • Basic skills and experience using precision measurement equipment.
  • Possess effective written and verbal communication skills with the interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively.
  • Experience with personal computers and associated software (Microsoft Office Suite).
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of bonding and potting hard points techniques in sandwich panels.
  • Experience using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software.
  • Familiarity with CNC programming (MasterCam).
  • Knowledge of additive manufacturing/electronics technology.
  • Significant experience with composite fabrication.
  • Advance skills and experience using hand tools and precision measurement equipment.
  • Experience using machine shop equipment e.g., mills, lathes, and cutting equipment, etc.
  • Experience with mechanical fabrication and assembly.

Responsibilities

  • Provide general technical support applying fundamental knowledge of fabrication, assembly, installation, and system operation under general supervision.
  • Fabricate, assemble/disassemble mechanical components and systems.
  • Use your composite worker and basic mechanical technician skills for component fabrication/repair e.g., wet layup, resin infusion, prepreg layup, vacuum bagging, and others.
  • Work with materials such as metals, plastics, carbon fiber, Fiberglass, Kevlar, various bagging films, etc.
  • Meet and maintain qualifications for programming and other requirements.
  • Operate machine shop equipment and hand tools to fabricate parts and support tools.
  • Apply general technologies and processes knowledge to interpret drawings and documentation.
  • Apply general knowledge of common technologies/processes, interpret basic -drawings/documentation, and solve basic system issues/malfunctions.
  • Maintain documentation and experimental records.
  • Perform equipment maintenance, equipment upgrades, and systems checks.
  • Follow and adhere to written, operational, and safety procedures.
  • Perform frequent work and office areas housekeeping.
  • Perform assignments in accordance with safety, security, and business practice requirements and policies.
  • Apply expertise of technologies/processes, interpret detailed drawings/documentation, and solve system issues/malfunctions.
  • Regular, independent interaction with projects leaders, scientists, engineers, and technical personnel.
  • Fabricate, assemble/disassemble complex mechanical parts, components, and systems independently.
  • Operate machine shop equipment to fabricate complex parts and support tools.
  • Understand processes and bagging procedures for oven cure parts.
  • Solve mechanical and operational problems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
