The New York State Department of Transportation is seeking an Engineering Technician Trainee / Senior Engineering Technician for Region 7. This position involves assisting engineering and higher-level technician staff in performing field and office engineering work. The selected candidate will perform technical duties in support of engineers or engineering programs, including taking measurements, checking computations, collecting and compiling data, and producing maps and plans. The role may involve working in both design and construction environments, with responsibilities including inspecting contractor operations, preparing daily work reports, and ensuring compliance with plans and specifications. The position may require overnight stays, night work, and weekend work for field assignments.

  • Assist engineering and higher-level technician staff in performing field and office engineering work.
  • Perform routine technical tasks such as taking measurements, checking computations, collecting and compiling data, and producing maps and plans.
  • Serve as a member of the field survey crew, assisting with survey operations.
  • Inspect contractor's operations to assure compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Take necessary material tests and prepare daily work reports documenting contractor's operations.
  • Monitor contractor's compliance with contract provisions such as EEO Labor Provisions and job safety.
  • Instruct seasonal and lesser experienced inspectors in project duties as needed.
  • Perform work in the Technical Services Unit including material production and plant inspection.
  • One year of experience assisting in engineering or related fields, and graduation from high school or equivalent.
  • 18 semester credit hours of college coursework in relevant fields.
  • Graduation from a high school technical program in CAD/CAM, construction technology, or related fields.
  • For Senior Engineering Technician, two years of experience in engineering or related fields, and graduation from high school or equivalent, or an associate's degree in relevant fields.
  • Experience with CADD and various computer applications.
  • Certification in CAD/CAM or related fields.
  • Full-time employment with a salary range from $38,571 to $65,061 annually.
