The Electrical and Computer Engineering Department is seeking an Engineering Technician - Project Appointment (temporary) to provide support for our instructional laboratories and academic programs. This position plays a critical role in ensuring the effective operation of teaching labs and hands‑on coursework under the supervision and direction of the ECE Instructional Lab Manager.

Requirements

• BSEE Degree OR three years of experience as an engineering technician
• Demonstrated ability to work independently
• Lab equipment operation and diagnostics
• Test equipment fault diagnosis, repair and calibration
• Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

• Experience with power electronics and drives
• Through hole and surface mount soldering
• PCB design
• Electronic CAD software

• FPGA programing in System Verilog

Responsibilities

• Ensure all lab test instrumentation and equipment is functional. Instruct TAs and students on the safe operation of all lab equipment (30% FTE)
• Carry out a full equipment functional inventory at the start of each quarter.
• Repair and replace defective equipment as necessary to ensure labs are operational.
• Meet with EE class TAs each quarter. As required, instruct TAs on the correct and safe operation of all lab equipment.
• Conduct a daily walk through of the Main undergraduate lab (EEB137) in coordination with the Instructional Lab Manager and ECE Store Student Assistants.
• Consult with instructors, TAs and students, address all equipment problems as required.
• Attend all lab sessions in the High Energy Lab (EEB053). Instruct TAs and students on the correct operation of the specialized high-energy equipment.
• Supervise and instruct TAs and students on all aspects of lab safety.
• Visit all other EE labs on a weekly basis. Communicate effectively with class instructors and TAs.
• Provide material support as requested by class instructors and TA’s.
• Consult with faculty to ensure installed lab test equipment meets EE curriculum requirements. Develop an effective equipment replacement and upkeep policy (10% FTE)
• Consult with department faculty on a regular basis to discuss specific lab equipment requirements and expectations. In particular, meet at least annually with the Associate Chair for Education, Faculty Undergraduate Coordinator, and Curriculum committee members.
• Consult regularly with Embedded Computing Systems concentration area faculty to discuss future upgrades to the embedded system lab platform.
• Consult regularly with Energy group faculty to discuss High Energy Systems lab requirements.
• As directed by the Instructional Lab Manager, consult with CSE department faculty regarding needs in courses offered equivalently by CSE and ECE departments
• Design and manufacture specialized lab equipment for EE classes (25% FTE)
• Embedded System classes. Custom-made expansion printed circuit boards (EE271, EE371), Energy Systems & Electric Drives classes. Custom-made power electronics modules for renewable energy lab experiments (EE351) and Electric drive capstone design project brushless DC motor platform (EE453). Main undergraduate lab transformers, loudspeaker enclosures, and resistance decade boxes (EE233, EE331, EE332).
• Responsible for the design, procurement, packaging, and distribution of all EE class lab kits (30% FTE)
• Consult with EE class instructors and discuss the upcoming quarter lab kit requirements. Make changes to EE lab kits as required.
• Purchase and distribute approximately 400 consumable lab kits each quarter (EE205, EE215, EE233, EE331, EE332, EE452).
• Procure parts, package and distribute lab kits each quarter (EE 280, EE 474)
• Collect, function test, prepare and distribute approximately 120 reusable lab kits each quarter (EE271, EE469).
• Work closely with faculty and instructors on EE course lab experiment design, production of course documentation, lab procedures and circuit schematics (5% FTE)
• Review High Energy Systems lab documentation on a regular basis.
• Assist faculty on occasion in the production of EE course lab documentation.
