About The Position

The Engineering Technician Lead position is a full-time role within the Public Works Department, specifically in the Right of Way Permits Division, located at 4721 Coal Mine Road, Kansas City, MO. This position is critical in ensuring compliance with traffic control permits, utility excavation, and street plate permits in the public right-of-way. The technician will be responsible for enforcing all related ordinances and specifications, assessing degradation fees, and managing a consistent volume of permits from various departments including KCMO Water Services, the development community, Spire, and multiple telecommunication providers. During snow emergencies, the technician will transition to snow removal duties, highlighting the need for flexibility and responsiveness in this role. The position requires a high school diploma and a minimum of five years of increasingly responsible experience in fields such as engineering drawing, mapping, automated mapping, GIS, CADD, engineering, land surveying, and construction inspection. Alternatively, candidates may qualify with two years of experience at the level of Engineering Technician and relevant certifications such as the Level II Engineering Technology Certification from NICET, the Land Surveyor in Training certification, or the Class B Wastewater Collections System Certification. A valid state-issued driver's license is mandatory, and candidates must pass a pre-employment drug screen and physical if moving from a non-safety-sensitive position. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in Energov, ADA Corner Inspection, or ATSSA certification.
