About The Position

Summit County is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Engineering Technician to join our Public Works/Engineering team. This position performs a variety of technical engineering duties related to the design, field survey, and inspection of public works projects and work performed within the County right-of-way. The Engineer Technician works under the general supervision of the County Engineer and plays an important role in supporting safe, efficient, and high-quality infrastructure for our community. Requirements

  • Graduation from high school; plus, two (2) years of specialized training related to engineering, computer aided drafting, public works construction, etc. AND
  • Three (3) years of responsible experience performing above and related duties; OR
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess a valid Utah driver's license.
  • Must have specific knowledge of AutoCAD.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified engineering technicians (NICET) in public works inspection will be given priority.

Responsibilities

  • Project Engineering: Performs a variety of journey level engineering technical functions related to the design of various public works projects; performs as a survey crew member as needed to collect project data essential to the completion of project design and specifications.
  • Assists in the development of bid and project specifications; prepares materials guidelines and requirements; assists to review contractor bids for assigned projects.
  • Monitors public works project activities to determine compliance with specifications and contract agreements, etc.; conducts public works inspections of basic materials and earth work, aggregate, asphalt, concrete, etc.; may conduct field tests on various materials, may sample materials and make simple calculations and measurements; inspects phases of highway construction such as concrete, hot‑mix asphalt, seal coat and related activities; assures project safety compliance.
  • Maintains various project records and prepares or reviews progress reports; determines eligibility for payment for services at various stages of project completion; makes recommendations for payment.
  • Performs complex computer‑aided drafting and design duties related to existing and proposed public works projects; updates county flood plain maps; provides drafting and design instruction and training to less skilled personnel.
  • Participates in location layout of various improvement projects such as streets, pipelines, recreation facilities, parking lots, public buildings etc.; participates on or directs a survey crew; operates survey equipment, shoots grades and elevations; utilizes computerized equipment as needed to translate, manipulate and interpret survey data; assists in the designing of roadways, parks, utility installations, and other public works projects.
  • Helps monitor work done within the County right of way through permitting and inspections.
  • Traffic/Safety Engineering: conducts county‑wide inventory of potential safety problems; participates in transportation and traffic studies; sets traffic counters, gathers data related to utilization and demand on various road ways, railroad crossings, intersections, etc.; computes and prepares traffic reports and road inventory results; operates computer to generate specialized charts and illustrations.
  • Performs related duties as assigned
