About The Position

Under general supervision, prepare local forecasts, weather warnings and alerts, and conduct weather surveillance activities to support operations for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) and Department of Energy (DOE) field site(s). Work with Electronics Technicians to conduct field maintenance and repair activities of a multi-station, geographically distributed weather station network.

Requirements

  • Associate's degree and 0-years of experience; or Vocational/Technical School degree/certificate in Weather Forecasting and 2-4 years of experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience performing duties as described may be substituted for the minimum requirements.
  • Must have completed a weather forecasting program such as a Weather Forecasting Certificate from Penn State or Mississippi State or a Military program equivalent to "A" and "C" School (Navy) or Weather Forecaster Apprentice Course (Air Force).
  • Punctuality and excellent attendance required.
  • Customer-friendly attitude required.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication, critical thinking, decision-making and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to coordinate, organize, and manage multiple tasks.
  • Conscientious attention to processes and procedures are required.
  • Two years of forecasting experience.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

  • Attention to detail, deadline consciousness, positive attitude, teamwork, strong work ethic, enthusiasm, and creativity desired.
  • Meteorology degree is not required.
  • Experience working in a Federal and/or research/operations environment.
  • Experience in interfacing with internal/external subject matter experts.
  • Coordination and multitasking with multiple organizations.
  • Knowledge of meteorological processes and products to develop accurate local weather forecasts.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and distribute accurate local weather forecasts for the NNSA (or DOE) Site.
  • Conduct weather surveillance on the NNSA (or DOE) site and issue weather advisories and alerts as necessary.
  • Assist with the maintenance, repair, upgrade, calibration/certification, and installation of the meteorological observing systems on the site.
  • Launch weather balloons in support of operations.
  • Collect meteorological data in support of operations
  • Provide data to customers as requested.
