About The Position

SUMMARY: We are seeking a highly experienced Engineering Technician IV to support advanced calibration, metrology, and measurement science activities for Navy Research, Development, Test & Evaluation (RDT&E) programs at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD). This senior‑level role requires deep technical expertise, strong analytical capabilities, and the ability to perform complex, non‑routine calibration and measurement tasks that directly support mission‑critical systems. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Conduct non‑routine and highly complex tests and calibrations, selecting, adapting, or modifying critical test equipment and procedures as required. Prepare, configure, and operate specialized test equipment; record detailed data; identify and document complex issues; and escalate problems requiring higher‑level resolution. Perform calibration activities using automatic calibration systems, including making major procedural modifications and applying expert technical judgment. Extract, compile, and process engineering data from diverse sources to support technical evaluations. Prepare Calibration Procedure Requests (CPRs), calibration reports, certificates, and technical summaries. Select and apply appropriate methods for presenting complex technical data to engineering and quality stakeholders. Develop and document test and calibration uncertainties, including creation and maintenance of Statistical Process Control (SPC) charts. Interpret, extend, and apply technical precedents related to precision RDT&E measurement techniques. Use advanced mathematical tools and analytical methods to solve highly complex measurement problems. Apply structured problem‑solving techniques to support complex measurement and evaluation tasks. Operate and maintain dimensional inspection equipment, including: Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) Hardness testers Optical comparators Precision height gages Microwave measurement equipment Ensure all measurement activities meet traceability and accuracy requirements. Write and revise calibration procedures based on manufacturer specifications and engineering requirements. Ensure laboratory processes and documentation comply with ISO/IEC 17025:2005, NAVSEA 04‑4734, and related Navy quality standards. Support internal and external audits through accurate documentation and adherence to established quality systems.

Requirements

  • Associate degree or higher in engineering, computer science, mathematics, or physical science; or 6–8 weeks PMEL School; or 4–6 weeks OEM technical training
  • Minimum seven (7) years of technical experience in calibration, metrology, measurement science, or related engineering disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform complex, non‑routine calibration tasks requiring adaptation of equipment and procedures.
  • Strong background in data analysis, uncertainty development, SPC, and technical reporting.
  • Hands‑on experience with dimensional inspection equipment and advanced measurement tools.
  • Knowledge of calibration traceability, laboratory quality systems, and Navy/DoD calibration standards.
  • CPR certification (or ability to obtain within one year).
  • Experience supporting Navy or DoD RDT&E environments.
  • Commitment to precision, accuracy, and continuous improvement.
  • Must have an Interim Secret or higher
