The Engineering Superintendent is responsible for specific project segments and activities related to engineering or marine engineering systems associated with the profitable repair of ships. Under the guidance of the assigned Project Manager, the superintendent plans, coordinates, manages, and evaluates work required to repair or modify marine vessels, ensuring timely, profitable results and satisfied customers. The role requires self-discipline, resourcefulness, and a willingness to accept responsibility for yard and customer assets related to the assigned project. The superintendent exercises independent judgment in adjusting priorities, goals, and work assignments to facilitate vessel repairs and shipyard maintenance. Overall goals, budgets, and priorities are established jointly with the appropriate manager, and progress is monitored through periodic evaluation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in marine engineering, naval architecture, or other related engineering function.
  • Four to six (4 to 6) years of progressively more complex work experience demonstrating required ship repair and production management skills.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.

Responsibilities

  • Develops short-term and long-term goals including work priorities and schedules for consideration by the assigned Project Manager.
  • Plans, coordinates, and directs daily and weekly production activities on assigned ship repair contracts and construction crafts.
  • Effectively communicates and collaborates with managers to develop strategies for timely and skill-specific deployment of personnel and equipment needed on projects.
  • Establishes integrated test plans, ensuring timelines and budgets are in sync with overall project.
  • Coordinates tasks for each job among customers, contract administrators, and craft workers, revising schedules as needed.
  • Inspects work in progress to ensure workmanship conforms to specifications and adherence to repair schedules.
  • Communicates project status to customers and the assigned Project Manager, participating in planning and production meetings.
  • Confers with and directs supervisory and project management personnel to establish and revise work schedules, clarify objectives, and resolve production issues.
  • Writes accurate and timely records or documentation for each job and contributes to final written specifications.
  • Prepares reports on work progress, materials used, costs, and adjusts work schedules as indicated by reports.
  • Reviews employee training needs and cross crafts trades workers to maximize employee skill base.
  • Develops, recommends, establishes, and enforces work standards, production schedules, quality and quantity requirements, and work rules consistent with operating policies.
  • Maintains effective working relationships with craft workers, customers, and contract administrators.
  • Ensures worker safety and environmental concerns are monitored and resolved, meeting standards set by regulatory bodies.
