This position supports the Division 5 / Youngsville Resident Engineer’s Office. This is the highest level of advanced technical work supporting engineers in functional areas such as highway construction, construction inspection, engineering coordination, and construction traffic control. Work involves a wide range of decision making and use of judgment and includes supervising and providing work direction to others. Position may function as lead inspector conducting independent complex inspections themselves and supervising lower level inspectors through at least one project inspector while also performing complex inspections of roadway and structure construction processes and materials to assure compliance with contract agreements, standards and specifications. Work may include training and instructing other technicians including reviewing their work for accuracy and completeness. Employee must be able to obtain and maintain certifications required to perform material sampling and testing related to the position. Applicant must be able to drive a motor vehicle. Possess experience in inspecting the construction of multiple bridges, specialty walls, and/or concrete pavement. Experience in inspecting phased construction under heavy traffic volumes. Experience in inspecting the construction of large grading projects. Perform inspections at night or during shift work. Ability to read, interpret, and explain construction plans, contract provisions, construction staking, specifications, inspection procedures, and environmental permits and drawings. Ability to effectively communicate and establish and maintain working relationships (both orally and in writing) with subordinates, contractor personnel, department personnel, other non-DOT agencies, and the general public. Ability to work near high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Ability to withstand extreme weather and terrain conditions while performing duties. Accurately maintain daily records of work accomplished. May be required to work nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours as necessary. Steel-toed shoes are required. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.
