About The Position

This posting is for an Engineering Specialist I position in the Division 4 Halifax County District Engineer’s office. Serves as the Lead Project Inspector responsible for overseeing daily field inspection activities, ensuring contractor compliance with project specifications, plans, and contract requirements. Leads and coordinates inspection teams, documents construction progress, and ensures work quality, safety, and adherence to all applicable standards. Performs advanced level technical inspection work and survey on large, complex highway and bridge construction projects administered by the NCDOT. Work involves on-site inspection, documentation, material testing, and quantity measurements of construction activities to ensure workmanship, materials, and methods comply with state and federal requirements. Provides technical leadership to lower-level technicians. Effective communication and leadership skills required. Ability to lead a team, mentor, and train others.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in an applicable area of engineering technology from an appropriately accredited institution and six (6) years of progressive technician experience; or
  • High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and eight (8) years of progressive technician experience; or
  • an equivalent combination of education and experience

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in applying engineering concepts to solve complex problems
  • Computer experience, including office software and drafting software
  • Knowledge of mathematical functions (such as algebra, geometry, and trigonometry)
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and procedures
  • Experience in taking notes, collecting field data, and preparing routine reports
