About The Position

AECOM is seeking an early-career Engineering Seismologist to join our infrastructure teams in Los Angeles or Oakland, California. This position supports the analysis and design of critical civil infrastructure, including dams, bridges, and related facilities—through the application of engineering seismology and seismic hazard methods. The selected candidate will work alongside experienced civil, geotechnical, and structural engineers to perform seismic hazard analyses, contribute to technical studies, and help translate seismic risk into practical, design-supporting solutions that improve infrastructure resilience and public safety. Ideal candidates will have the following types of skills and experience:

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Geology, Seismology, or a related discipline and 2+ years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree in Engineering, Geology, Seismology, or a related field
  • Experience with seismic hazard software tools (e.g., OpenSHA, OpenQuake, or similar).
  • Experience with development of Seismic Source Characterization (e.g. earthquake catalogs, recurrence)
  • Proficiency in Fortran.
  • Strong programming skills with proficiency in Python and/or MATLAB (required).
  • Foundational knowledge of probabilistic seismic hazard analysis and strong ground motion principles.
  • Familiarity with seismic data processing and numerical modeling techniques.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct seismic hazard analyses, including probabilistic seismic hazard assessments (PSHA) and deterministic seismic hazard analyses (DSHA)
  • Assist in the development and application of seismic hazard methodologies and computational models
  • Perform data analysis and visualization using programming tools (Python and/or MATLAB)
  • Collaborate with geologists, engineers, and other specialists to integrate seismic hazard findings into project designs
  • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and documentation for internal and external stakeholders
  • Stay updated on advancements in seismic hazard research and contribute to the improvement of methodologies

Benefits
