About the position

The Engineering Project Manager at Colorado School of Mines plays a crucial role in managing a diverse portfolio of projects, including student housing, research labs, and office redesigns. This position is integral to the Office of Design and Construction (ODC), which oversees over 180 projects annually, ensuring alignment with the university's strategic goals to enhance the student experience. The role requires collaboration with internal and external partners, effective budget management, and oversight of project execution from pre-design to completion.

Responsibilities

  • Develop project scope, schedule, and budgets based on meetings with faculty and staff.
  • Hire and direct the work of outside professionals or develop design depending on the project.
  • Apply engineering practices, codes, and standards to solve project-specific issues and negotiate contracts with design professionals.
  • Oversee the bid process and contract general contractors.
  • Make field observations and direct staff in inspections to ensure project compliance with specifications and codes.
  • Facilitate construction progress meetings, manage project scope, schedule, and budget, and oversee project close-out.
  • Provide design consultants with direction regarding project scope, budget, and schedule.
  • Communicate project status and tasks to the work unit.
  • Qualify and select individuals and firms for professional services based on Colorado State Buildings procedures.
  • Make decisions regarding building modifications based on architectural practices and building codes.
  • Evaluate and approve or deny contractor change order pricing and pay applications based on field inspections and contract documents.
  • Negotiate design fees with professional consultants based on project scope and effort.
  • Lead the project team in design and construction document development.
  • Manage project budgets and schedules to ensure timely and on-budget delivery.
  • Represent the Agency's position on campus design and construction standards.
  • Review design work for compliance with International Building Codes.
  • Assist in collecting and analyzing building and infrastructure data for future space needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Five years of professional experience in design, construction project management, or construction administration.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification in Colorado, with the option to obtain certification within one year of hire.

Nice-to-haves

  • More than five years of experience in mechanical or electrical engineering or project management.
  • PE License or FE/EIT certification with the ability to obtain PE license preferred.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or Revit.
  • Knowledge of Colorado Revised Statutes, State Fiscal Rules, and State Buildings Programs, or the ability to gain this knowledge within the first three months.
