About The Position

Fermilab’s Accelerator Directorate, Beams Division, is seeking a highly motivated Engineering Physicist II to support the Main Injector Department. Under the general direction of a senior Engineering Physicist, Engineer, or Scientist, the selected candidate applies fundamental knowledge of physics, engineering principles, and problem-solving techniques to support the design, development, and operation of moderately complex systems, components, and processes. This role utilizes modern analytical tools, software and hardware development methods, system integration and testing practices, and microelectronic circuit design principles commonly used in scientific, chemical, mechanical, and engineering applications. The position supports the monitoring and evaluation of facility operations to identify operational issues, ensure proper equipment performance, and maintain compliance with safety specifications and regulatory requirements. The individual analyzes results, develops improvement plans, and supports operational readiness for projects and systems requiring application of these engineering and scientific principles. What your day-to-day as an Engineering Physicist II at Fermilab will look like: Assist in machine beam studies and tuning. Serve as Machine Coordinator for the Main Injector department as needed. Working on-call is required. Participate in accelerator shutdown planning and execution. Assist with safety documentation, procedures, and requirements relating to machine operations and shutdown activities. Specify requirements of systems and processes and verify performance requirements. Perform data collection, processing and analysis. Evaluate findings and develop plans and improvements to meet project or operational goals. Serve as a subject matter expert for various machine systems, subsystems and processes. Interact with other subject experts to coordinate the modifications or repairs to existing systems or processes and to propose new, improved or upgraded systems or processes. Determine measurement/tests needed to evaluate system or process performance. Write, edit and review scientific papers. Write, edit, maintain, document and review computer programming code used to operate, study and monitor the machines. Perform other duties as assigned. Abide by all environment, safety, and health regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher degree in some technical discipline (e.g. Physics, Engineering).
  • 3+ years’ experience.
  • Minimum 5 years’ relevant work experience is required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills are required.
  • Moderate computer programming experience is required.
  • Moderate experience with data collection and analysis is preferred.
  • Ability to coordinate activities between departments is required.
  • Ability to work in a radiation environment is required.
  • Ability to lift to 30 lbs. and occasionally perform light physical work is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with accelerator operations is preferred.
  • Experience with creating and delivering presentations is preferred.
  • Experience with computer programming application development, testing and version control is preferred.
  • Basic knowledge of electrical circuitry is preferred
  • Basic knowledge of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Regulation and Control concepts is preferred.
  • Knowledge of ES&H policies and procedures is preferred.
