Engineering Manager, Cloud Platform

Amplitude San Francisco, CA
76d$213,000 - $368,000

About The Position

Amplitude’s Platform team is the foundation for how our engineers build, deploy, and operate software. We manage our Kubernetes-based infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, observability stack, developer tooling, and the golden path for delivering reliable, secure, and cost-efficient systems - and we do it by taking a software development approach to problem solving. We’re looking for an Engineering Manager to lead this team of highly experienced engineers. This role is critical to ensuring daily tactical success while also evolving our infrastructure and developer experience. You will balance hands-on technical credibility with transformational leadership, enabling the team to deliver effectively today while shaping how Amplitude builds software in the future. This role reports to the Senior Director of Infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Proven leadership experience managing a team of senior/staff-level engineers, ideally in a platform, infrastructure, or developer experience domain.
  • Strong technical background in cloud-native infrastructure: Kubernetes, CNCF ecosystem tools, CI/CD, observability, infra-as-code (Terraform or equivalents).
  • Ability to judge and coach technical quality — not necessarily by writing every line of code, but by understanding engineering trade-offs and maintaining high standards.
  • Transformational leadership mindset with a track record (or strong passion) for leveraging AI/LLMs to improve developer productivity and platform tooling.
  • Customer-centricity: Demonstrated success in building platforms that internal engineers love to use.
  • Growth mindset: Both for yourself and for your team. Track record of mentoring, coaching, and promoting talent.
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills, with a track record of partnering across engineering and security teams.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience scaling platforms in AWS and Kubernetes-based environments.
  • Familiarity with FinOps practices and optimizing cloud cost efficiency.
  • Prior experience leading infrastructure or platform org transformations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Infra Platform team of engineers, fostering a culture of business impact, ownership, accountability, and customer-centricity.
  • Provide technical leadership in Kubernetes, CNCF ecosystem tooling, CI/CD, observability, and infrastructure-as-code — guiding the team with credible insights and judgment.
  • Spend ~30% of your time hands on - code contributions will very much be part of the day to day. We have tools written in Go, Python, Node, Javascript, etc.
  • Drive AI transformation in developer experience by identifying and implementing ways to use AI/LLMs beyond code generation — such as automating Platform onboarding, using AI Ops to auto-heal systems, or other abstractions that simplify developer workflows and eliminate copy/paste patterns.
  • Own people management responsibilities: Conduct regular 1:1s, provide coaching, and ensure engagement across the team.
  • Run performance reviews, hold team members accountable to growth plans, and make promotion and compensation recommendations.
  • Recognize and reward progress, celebrate successes, and ensure engineers feel supported and challenged.
  • Drive alignment within a team of strong, experienced engineers — facilitating healthy debate, making trade-offs, and ensuring the team delivers cohesive solutions.
  • Ensure high code quality and engineering standards by actively reviewing, providing feedback, and spotting quality trends at both the individual and team level.
  • Partner cross-functionally with Security Engineering, FinOps, and Product Engineering teams to identify opportunities and deliver solutions that benefit all of Engineering and/or our products.
  • Contribute to strategic direction of the platform organization, while ensuring day-to-day operational success and tactical execution.
