About The Position

Engineering Leads in BIW’s Design Services Mechanical Engineering group perform duties and provide leadership and supervision to teams of Engineers, Technicians, and BMDA Designers to accomplish BIW LYS contract tasking and support for all DDG 51 New Construction. They work to create the 3D and 2D design products in configurations for multiple Navy surface combatant programs, including DDG 51 New Construction and DDG(X) next generation development. Utilizing the Business Operating System the team works to meet all quality, schedule, and cost goals in support of the Lead Yard Services operating plan. The Design Services HVAC Engineering & Design Lead will be charged with oversight of HVAC systems and oversee Engineers and Design teams in the performance of their duties. They will provide supervision and leadership in a variety of technical deliverables and products, as well as helps drive continuous improvement plans. The HVAC Engineering Lead will ensure compliance with safety, quality, technical, and performance standards and have goals to further develop and grow the capabilities of the team.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering is Required.
  • Expert knowledge of Design Services Detail Design and change process is required.
  • Minimum 5 years of technical Design, Engineering, project management, or combination required.
  • 3 years of technical supervisory / project lead experience required, including demonstrated technical / project management skills.
  • Ability to lead, motivate, and inspire teams of engineers, technicians, and designers.
  • Understands the elements of ship design.
  • Excellent organizational and communications skills, both oral and written.
  • Proficiency with computers, including Microsoft Office products, required.
  • Ability and willingness to work in, and promote, a true team environment.
  • Successful experience in implementing and monitoring continuous improvement initiatives to improve safety, improve quality, reduce cycle time, and reduce costs.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong technical understanding of DDG 51 HVAC detail and Functional products is highly desirable.
  • Ability to understand and interpret technical requirements and drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Be a safety leader for your team and ensure that each person leaves in the condition they came in.
  • Ensure employees comply with all applicable safety guidelines, including PPE, adherence to the safety absolutes, and provide guidance to understand on-the-job risks and responsibilities.
  • Ensure all safety training is completed on time.
  • Oversee execution of the DDG 51 New construction contract, ensuring compliance with all contractual requirements including specifications standards, and project timelines.
  • Ensures design tasks are completed to established schedule, cost, and quality parameters.
  • Inputs accurate and timely work order status.
  • Develops ROM (Rough order of Magnitude) and GAF (Growth Authorization Form) design estimates.
  • Processes and verifies employee time accounting records and ensures required LMS training courses are completed ahead of schedule.
  • Lead efforts, including technical content, calculations, functional diagrams, procedures, and work instructions that support The HVAC engineering and design efforts.
  • Set appropriate team expectations for completion of goals.
  • Ensure accountability of task and goal completion.
  • Manage processes to ensure that quality, schedule and cost performance goals are achieved on all programs.
  • Perform supervisory and administrative duties including resource management, employee development, safety, performance evaluations, progress reporting, assist with hiring, honoring labor contracts, employee time verification, and BMDA contract administration.
  • Provide a plan for technical training, guidance and leadership to assigned personnel.
  • Establish and maintain effective work procedures and instructions for engineering processes.
  • Provide onboarding and mentor plans for new engineers entering the team.
  • Ensure proper communication is maintained among the team and with other groups.
  • Interface with, and support, Engineering, Program Office, Design, Manufacturing, Navy, and other customer organizations as required.
  • Follow the BIW Business Operating system, utilizing tools to improve and enhance the team, including root cause analysis (A3’s), Kaizens, or other continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Maintain Viz board for tracking and awareness, and use dashboard metrics, to identify problem areas, Create plans & mitigations to improve performance.
