The intern will support product development and innovation projects for the mechanical engineering department. Tasks could include working with engineers on sections of their designs, taking on small design projects, developing test setups, managing bills of material, generating documentation, and/or reducing assembly costs or risks.

  • Brainstorm new products or assemblies, and/or upgrades to products or assemblies.
  • Develop component models, assembly models, and/or drawings of design concepts within the context of product development or R&D projects.
  • Evaluate and analyze parts, assemblies, or systems in light of product/project requirements, including functionality, risk, cost, agency, or other factors.
  • Build prototypes and support testing by writing test requests, performing or overseeing testing and data collection, analyzing data, and writing reports.
  • Develop and execute experiments for components and assemblies.
  • Support project or other engineering efforts by writing and submitting purchase requisitions, journals, engineering change orders, and other documentation as required.
  • Other duties as needed and directed by the supervisor.
  • Must actively be working towards a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or closely related field and have completed at least 2 full years of coursework.
  • Robust prior technical project experience is strongly preferred.
  • Effective communicator, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to read, understand, and follow written instructions.
  • Ability to deliver results within established time, budget, and resource constraints.
  • Proficiency with word processing and spreadsheet applications required (MS Office preferred).
  • Working knowledge of MS Project is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of 3D CAD is strongly preferred.
  • An understanding of design principles for assemblies, sheet metal, and/or injection molded components is a plus.
  • Must be able to work well under direction of several engineers with frequent interruptions and shifting priorities.
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work with little direct supervision.
