Each NYSDOT employee plays an important part in fulfilling the Department's mission and goals, as we are one DOT working cohesively to ensure the state has a safe, efficient, balanced and environmentally sound transportation system. Duties will vary from position to position, based on the assignment, but they all have a common goal - to enhance public safety. Engineering interns may work in one of a variety of program areas under the direct supervision of a NYSDOT Professional Engineer, Senior Landscape Architect, Senior Land Surveyor, or Environmental Specialist. Based on the assignment, interns will perform duties such as GIS, engineering, research, policy and planning, surveying, administration, environmental science, landscape architecture, etc. to achieve the mission of the agency. Responsibilities may include serving a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.

  • Work under the direct supervision of a NYSDOT Professional Engineer, Senior Landscape Architect, Senior Land Surveyor, or Environmental Specialist.
  • Perform duties such as GIS, engineering, research, policy and planning, surveying, administration, environmental science, landscape architecture.
  • Enhance public safety through various engineering tasks.
  • Serve a role within the Incident Command System to support the department's response to regional and statewide emergency situations.
  • Must have completed at least 12 credit hours of college study.
  • Currently enrolled in an accredited degree program in Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering, Construction Engineering Technology, Construction Engineering Management, Construction Engineering Management Technology, Geotechnical Engineering, Hydraulics Engineering, Materials Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Structural Engineering, Transportation Engineering, or Transportation Planning and Engineering.
