Engineering Intern

NOV Inc.Houston, TX

About The Position

We are seeking a mechanical engineering intern to support the modernization of a coil tubing (CT) dynamometer system used to test downhole motors. This system circulates fluid through a motor while applying load to measure performance, integrating mechanical, fluid, and controls systems. This project is focused on developing a structured engineering definition package using current standards. The goal is to create a clear, organized foundation that can be used for future system redesign and deployment. This is a multidisciplinary opportunity that provides exposure to real-world system integration—not just component-level design. This role is ideal for a student interested in systems-level engineering and looking to bridge the gap between academic theory and real-world applications.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a system overview and functional breakdown of the existing CT dyno, identifying major subsystems and how they interact
  • Create an updated Piping & Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID) using current company standards
  • Generate a high-level mechanical layout (general arrangement) showing major components and flow paths
  • Define an instrumentation and I/O list, including key measurements (flow, pressure, temperature, torque, speed) and signal types
  • Support development of a controls concept, including block diagrams of control loops and system interactions
  • Perform a gap analysis to identify missing information, risks, and areas requiring redesign or clarification
  • Provide modernization recommendations for updating the system using current controls and data acquisition standards (e.g., PLC-based architecture)
