About The Position

Clay Electric Cooperative Engineering Internship Program: Clay Electric’s engineering internship program is an opportunity for selected college students to gain real-world, on-the-job experience, while networking with business professionals and developing valuable leadership. Individuals will be directed and mentored by qualified Clay Electric employees to develop engineering experience and skills required within the electric utility industry to design and maintain a safe, reliable, and affordable electrical system. The program will be a twelve (12) week program over the summer with a maximum thirty-two (32) hours per week. Classification Summary: Individuals in this position will be responsible for assisting with the design, planning, and support of the Operational Technology (OT) network that is used to monitor and control the electric power distribution and transmission system. Work will be performed under the direct supervision of the OT Cybersecurity Architect (CISSP certified) or an Engineer (with a Professional Engineering license), Senior Engineer or assigned Division Manager.

Requirements

  • Students must be a Junior or Senior working towards a major in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Cybersecurity, attending a regionally accredited school, with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Current transcripts are to be provided with resume and application.
  • Individuals in this position must have been enrolled in at least twelve (12) credit hours during the Spring 2026 semester and maintain a valid State of Florida driver's license.
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment, including a personal computer, iPad, printers, copy machines, telephone, and fax machine.
  • Ability to interpret computer network diagrams, network architecture documentation, construction assembly drawings; ability to understand changes and make corrections to structural/physical layout drawings and electrical schematics.
  • Computer proficiency with the ability to utilize Microsoft Office applications; ability to learn Clay Electric’s GIS and OMS system (NISC), Clay Electric’s engineering modeling tool (CYME), AutoCAD, Microsoft Visio, and other corporate computer systems applicable to the position.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills including written, verbal and listening to effectively interact with employees, supervisor, and managers.
  • Ability to give and receive communications involving both employees and other departments.
  • Ability to read engineering publications and keep abreast of engineering technological changes and advancements in the area of this section's responsibilities.
  • The physical demands of this position require exposure to adverse elements and the normal hazards associated with working in the field such as opening gates, walking over rough terrain, heavy woods and brush, aggressive pets/animals and climbing fences.

Responsibilities

  • Data Collection. Collects field data related to Operational Technology (OT) communications system equipment including switches, UPS, modems, servers, power supplies, and server racks for the review, evaluation, and/or modification of existing documentation and drawings. Data collection may also include capturing equipment configuration details like IP addresses, network port details, and cable interconnections.
  • Engineering Design. Assists in the preparation of distribution and transmission staking packages for construction work plan and/or budget related projects.
  • Engineering Documentation. Creates, modifies, or updates visual representations of equipment installations and network diagrams using either AutoCAD or Microsoft Visio software.
  • Standards. Assists with creating or modifying assembly manual drawings via ACAD for the Overhead and Underground Construction manuals.
  • Updating Asset Management Records. Collects and updates asset records into Clay Electric’s OT asset management system. This includes data verification, data normalization, and uploading vetted data into systems.
  • Operations of Equipment. Operates assigned vehicle in a safe and efficient manner and keep the vehicle clean and orderly, while coordinating any necessary repairs or maintenance items with Fleet Services. Complies with all traffic laws and related safety rules and safe work practices in the Cooperative Safety Manual.
  • Safety. Practices safe work habits in the performance of all job duties and is familiar with and follows those portions of the Cooperative Safety Manual that pertain to the position.
  • Other Essential Duties. Each employee is responsible to perform other duties as required to benefit the Cooperative and its members, includes responding to and/or assisting in emergency situations.
