Western 102 Power Station and Solar Plant is a 116-MW natural gas–fueled facility located in Storey County, Nevada, providing reliable and flexible power to support regional mining operations. The plant utilizes 14 Wärtsilä 34SG spark-ignition engines housed in a prefabricated structure with two engine halls, each containing seven gensets, designed for efficient high-altitude performance and low emissions through lean-burn, pre-combustion chamber technology. Complementing the thermal generation is a 1-MW AC (1,000-kW) solar photovoltaic system, enhancing overall efficiency and energy diversity. Opportunity Summary The Engineering Intern assists in the safe and efficient operation of the power plant and the supporting equipment and systems. This position will be expected to support various projects as determined by department managers. Here's a look at the projects planned during this internship period: Commission rebuilt engine – Work with operations and maintenance to perform checks, rounds and inspections. Overhead crane replacement – Assist with ensuring safety policies and procedures are followed by the contractors. Assist with ensuring all documentation required for MOC is supplied and saved. Review and trace plant systems – Update P&IDs as needed. 4k and 2k maintenances – Assist with performing these maintenance activities. Inventory audit – Assist with verifying inventory counts and updating the CMMS. Internship Experiences: Safety policies, procedures, and best practices Drawing updates Data collection and analysis Plant operations Engine and BOP maintenance Inventory / CMMS Compensation The hourly rate of pay will be $22.00 per hour. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility. Fitness for Duty All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening. Work Schedule Normal working hours are Monday through Thursday, 5:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. This position may require participation in a rotating schedule, including 12-hour day and night shifts (8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. / 8:00 p.m. – 8:00 a.m.), for training and operational support. Education and Experience Required We are accepting applications from current students enrolled in an Engineering program; third year student in mechanical or electrical engineering preferred. Educational concentration in power generation systems and equipment, including operational theory and engineering safety is desired.
