About The Position

This internship at Xcel Energy offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to large generation projects such as wind, solar, hydro, or natural gas platforms. The intern will report directly to the MPG Project Manager and support them in tracking project deliverables, contract management, reporting, and conducting field inspections and safety audits during construction. Additionally, the intern will assist the Project Engineer with reviewing submittals, responding to RFIs, and supporting quality control activities. The role involves working as an entry-level engineering analyst, performing tasks across plant operations including engineering, project management, and construction. Responsibilities also include submittal coordination, drawing support, construction planning and oversight, schedule review, quality control support, vendor outreach, and some exposure to budgeting. The intern will collaborate with Project Management and Engineering staff to support operational and engineering requests, making performance/efficiency improvement recommendations. Strong communication skills will be leveraged to build relationships with key project stakeholders like environmental, land rights, various engineering groups, project controls, external consultants, and development partners to support project planning. The intern is expected to acquire and develop knowledge in assigned areas through interaction and learning from these sources, meet established turnaround time criteria, and innovate methods to improve stakeholder engagement and team effectiveness. The position has a start date of June 1st, 2026, and may extend beyond the initial term based on performance and business needs.

Requirements

  • A current Sophomore or Junior (as of Fall 2026)
  • Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, or Environmental Engineering
  • Must be local to Colorado and attend school in-state (CO)
  • Able to travel/commute to multiple offices/sites in Denver Metro area and Eastern Colorado
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to communicate effectively; both written and verbally
  • Must be self- motivated, have good mechanical aptitude, and ability to work well with others
  • Able to work full-time during the summer (up to 40 hours a week)/ part time during the fall (up to 20 hours a week)
