About The Position

The Seasonal Engineering Intern will report to the Highway Engineer and assist the engineering staff with various project development tasks and assist with engineering support of County Highway operations.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution with an engineering major declared.
  • Must be 18 years old and enrolled in higher education for the fall semester.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license and maintain with a clean driving record
  • Must provide own steel-toed shoes.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and be self-motivated.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to fill out daily reports.
  • Ability to read and understand street maps, plat maps, engineering plans and basic technical documents.
  • Ability to learn and utilize County-based GIS (geographic information system) software and other transportation inventory software such as WISLR (Wisconsin Information System for Local Roads) and web-based safety-reporting software.
  • Ability to drive efficiently and safely.
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with other employees and interact with the public in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Ability to perform work in a variety of temperatures and adverse weather conditions, and be in good physical condition.
  • Ability to lift, push, pull, and move up to 50 lbs.
  • Ability to work in a safe manner and utilize PPE.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of college completed with civil engineering major declared is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Create engineering drawings using AutoCAD and ArcGIS.
  • Perform basic surveying functions using laser and GPS equipment.
  • Assist in the collection, processing, and compilation of traffic count data.
  • Assist with engineering field reviews for highway permits, culvert and drainage improvements, pavement condition, bridges and structures, guardrails and roadside safety items, and other roadway and roadside appurtenances.
  • Research and analyze safety, traffic, and crash-related data and prepare associated engineering recommendations and/or summary reports.
  • Assist engineering and operations staff with signing and pavement marking plan(s) and layout, construction staking, and other tasks as assigned.
  • Document construction activities and perform construction inspection and support tasks as assigned, including tracking construction project quantities, work progress, and costs.
  • Required to be able to work independently with limited direct supervision.
  • Performs work of "Seasonal Highway Worker" as required.
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance.
  • May be required to work outside of normal department work hours on a limited basis.
  • Other duties as assigned.
