About The Position

At the SEI AI Division, we conduct research in applied artificial intelligence and the engineering questions related to the practical design and implementation of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies and systems. We currently lead a community-wide movement to mature the discipline of AI Engineering for Defense and National Security. As our government customers adopt AI and machine learning (ML) to provide leap-ahead mission capabilities, we: build real-world, mission-scale AI capabilities through solving practical engineering problems. discover and define the processes, practices, and tools to support operationalizing AI for robust, secure, scalable, and human-centered mission capabilities. prepare our customers to be ready for the unique challenges of adopting, deploying, using, and maintaining AI capabilities. identify and investigate emerging AI and AI-adjacent technologies that are rapidly transforming the technology landscape. Position Summary: As an intern in our Advanced Computing Lab, you will work with a team of electrical engineers and computer science researchers on analyzing and improving mission system performance metrics through the use of novel AI-focused hardware accelerators, FPGAs, optimized low-level algorithms, and experimental compilers.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree granting program.
  • Able to work an internship schedule during the summer semester.
  • Able to work on-site 5 days in the SEI Pittsburgh office.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States without visa sponsorship.
  • Candidates will be subject to a background check.
  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work for CMU in the United States. CMU will not sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment visa for this opportunity.
  • Experience with modern software languages such as Python and C/C++, and hardware design languages including Verilog, VHDL, or other HLS languages
  • Familiarity with software and hardware engineering processes
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact collaboratively and diplomatically with customers and colleagues

Responsibilities

  • Execute on tasking given to support ongoing projects within the Advanced Computing Lab, which could consist of:
  • Profiling performance of various compute systems
  • Testing and debugging ML-related algorithms
  • Supporting the development of prototypes, tools, and demos
  • Collecting and curating project-related code, research publications, and hardware specifications
  • FPGA design and simulation
